Artest Will Only Join Rockets If He Gets A Commitment

Jul 31, 2008 10:06 AM EST
Ron Artest said that he was excited about going to the Rockets but would join them only if they are committed to him, the Houston Chronicle is reporting.

Artest's comments about commitment stem from Yao Ming’s wariness of the trade. Ming is happy with the deal but is concerned for team chemistry.

“We’ve still got to make sure there’s still a commitment,” Artest told the Sacramento Bee. “That’s the main thing. When I speak to the powers-that-be of the Houston Rockets organization, we’re going to find out how much they really want me there.”

“For some reason, I like (Artest),” Yao said, “because in the games we play against him, I hate him."

“When I text-messaged with Luis (Scola), we talked about team chemistry. That’s only what worries us. We worry about the new attitude to the team. We are adding talent to the team, and we need that, but building team chemistry is important. This is not bad. I don’t mean he is not welcome to Houston. But a new player always needs some time."

“There’s worry. Obviously, yes. ... Hopefully, he’s not fighting anymore and going after a guy in the stands. ... I have to find a way to talk to him and see what we can do as a basketball team. He has a history, but we know he is a physical player. He is a good player. He really can help us.”

Maybe Yao should shut up and worry about winning games and staying healthy.

Artest improves his chances of winning it all. Don't be a puss and be a leader once he's there. In house. Not in the media.

Amazing players talking about chemistry?

They are questioning bring in a nut job who has a history of fighting, distractions off the court, and cracking under pressure in the playoffs by losing his mind and the eventual "headaches".

Adleman has to sell the team on this guy, but Ron wants money. He wants an extention.

The problem with this moron is he is a great player but does not have the trust to invest long term in him. He was doing fine until he lost his mind about opting out AFTER THE FACT and again became a problem. Thats why he got traded. Had he just kept his mouth shut and towed the line they might have extended him this season. He must prove yet again he can be a good soldier.

He should go to Rockets, put his ego aside, carry a dictionary so he can understand Battier when he speaks, go deep in the playoffs, then be an unrestricted free agent and perhaps get his money.

A day after the Rockets and Sacramento Kings agreed in principle to a deal sending Artest to Houston for Bobby Jackson, Donte Greene and a first-round draft pick, Yao expressed concerns about team chemistry to the Houston Chronicle and referenced Artest's involvement in the 2004 brawl with Pistons fans.

"Hopefully, he's not fighting anymore and going after a guy in the stands," Yao said, according to the Chronicle.

When asked about those comments, Artest said Yao had bought into "all the propaganda" about him, according to The Sacramento Bee.

"I understand what Yao said, but I'm still ghetto," Artest said, according to the report. "That's not going to change. I'm never going to change my culture. Yao has played with a lot of black players, but I don't think he's ever played with a black player that really represents his culture as much as I represent my culture. Once Yao Ming gets to know me, he'll understand what I'm about.

"If you go back to the brawl, that's a culture issue right there," Artest added, according to the report. "Somebody was disrespecting me, so he's got to understand where I'm coming from. People that know me know that Ron Artest never changed."

Artest is still talkin that ****. He wasn't poppin that **** when Ben Wallace almost decapitated his has just seconds before the brawl. That's how he ended up on the scorers table in the first place. He was running from Ben.

what's the problem w/HOU's franchise player saying these things? he's not badmouthing Artest here, he's just stating the obvious.

While Yao should keep his mouth shut, he does bring out a major point of success in the NBA: "TEAM CHEMISTRY" Something the Knicks havent had for years. For D'A, team chemistry and unselfish play are the key for his system and style of coaching.

I dont think Artest can handle being in the news - he is way too unstable. Talented guy but look at what happens when the spotlight is on him.

From that perspective I think Yao has every right to be concerned.

OOps, here it is !!

Report: Artest replies to Yao, seeks 'commitment' from Rockets

The potential trade of Ron Artest to the Houston Rockets may have gotten off on the wrong foot over comments made by Artest's potential teammate, Yao Ming, about Artest's stormy past.

Hopefully, [Artest isn't] fighting anymore and going after a guy in the stands.
--Yao Ming

If you go back to the brawl, that's a culture issue right there. Somebody was disrespecting me, so he's got to understand where I'm coming from. People that know me know that Ron Artest never changed.

"If you go back to the brawl, that's a culture issue right there," Artest added, according to the report. "Somebody was disrespecting me, so he's got to understand where I'm coming from. People that know me know that Ron Artest never changed."

The agreed-to deal sending Artest to Houston cannot become official until Aug. 14. And Artest, who has one year remaining on his contract, also said he was looking for a long-term deal from the Rockets, according to the report.

"We've still got to make sure there's still a commitment [from the Rockets]," Artest said, according to the Bee. "That's the main thing, is to make sure there's still a commitment. When I speak to the powers-that-be of the Houston Rockets' organization, we're going to find out how much they really want me there. We'll find out. I'm still waiting to find out if this is just a trade or if this is like a long-term commitment-type thing. I haven't spoken to anybody yet. I'm still waiting."

That appeared to be a shift in Artest's outlook from earlier Wednesday, when he told ESPN.com of the trade, "I'll be a kid in a candy store … I'm going to dance with the stars."

He also said he's waiting for a phone call from Yao, according to the Bee.

"I guess once Yao Ming approves [the deal], I'll be a Houston Rocket," Artest said, according to the report. "[Yao] probably should've called me first. But at the same time, it's Yao Ming's team.

"Whatever Yao Ming wants me to do, I'll be there. Whatever Tracy McGrady tells me to do, that's how it's going to go down. Ultimately, whatever [Rockets] coach Rick Adelman tells me to do is exactly what I'm going to do."

The chemistry they had before the Artest deal wasn't of championship callibre or even the second round playoff callibre. Artest gives this team a legit shot to finally get past the first round and even contend for the western conf championship.

The bottomline is - people NEVER change.
Thats why players like Ron, Steph, Eddy, Zack, Jerom, Nate, Craf alike will always be what they are...
Forever... defective.

I guess Yao thinks exiting in the 1st round every year good chemistry. I am sure Rockets fans hope that some of Artest's insanity rubs off on Yao and he finally grow a pair.
