Nixluva, good point about two way players. You can get away with some specialists on a team, but you need a nucleus of players who are effective on both sides of the court. The Kicks first championship team had that with Reed, DeBusschere, Frazier, Barnett and Bradley. When Monroe and Lucas were added, there was still the nucleus of Reed, DeBusschere, Clyde and Bradley who played effective o and d.
In basketball, if you have a guy who doesn't play offense or defense, you're 4 against 5 on that side of the court. Two way players are essential. That's why I'm very optimistic about Wilson Chandler.
To me this is the core issue for team success. You increase your winning % if you can have more 2 way players on the floor. So far we don't have many, but Chan and Duhon is a start. I believe that in a team concept Gallo and Lee will defend. They may not be excellent man on man defenders, but on most good defensive teams you may not have but one true defensive beast. The other guys just play hard, smart and as a unit on D and that is how you get it done.
The defensive middle for this team is still our biggest weak spot. I don't know what Waltoni will do, but I suspect that after having at least a shotblocking presence in Amare he will want to have that again here. Amare wasn't a strong man defender, but as a help defender he was very effective. Raja and Marion gave them guys who gave effort and I think we can approximate that here even now with Chan and Q if he is in top shape. Q was a good defender for us when he wasn't 20lbs over weight.
OF course the big 1000 lb gorilla is the Zbo/Curry tandem. if we start with that there's really no way to have a solid defense. This is what leads me to think something will happen before the start of the season. If not then surely a situation where Mike brings ZBo or Curry off the bench might be in order.
