If you look at what D'Antoni was doing with the center position in Phoenix you can easily see that he never really had a traditional center playing significant minutes. Don't know whether this was by design or because he never had a big man who could fit into his system. I expect, though, that if we had KG on this team, he would be playing center for us.
Chandler, Jeffries, Lee, Gallo, Randolph, Curry... The first 2 can play some D, but Jeffries is an offensive stiff; The second 2 have the heart to play D, but Lee has not proven to be a strong defender, and Gallo is young and unproven; The final 2 play dodge-ball D- they seem to try their best to stay away from the ball/dribbler when it is heading toward the basket.
It will be fascinating to see how Randolph fits on this team, and if he even attempts to play D during the early part of the season.
Even if Curry gets his weight down, his jumper is not up to D'Antoni standards, and he will probably never have the rebounding/defensive "instincts" needed to play up to his "potential."
We could use a Camby with a midrange jumper. I think you can get by with a less beefy frontline if you have a good helping defense, and I have seen Gallinari come over to block shots in some of his clips, and Chandler do it in the NBA, but I would still like to have a big man who can put some doubt or hesitation into the heads of the guys who were driving on us with impunity last year.
What we need is a Willis Reed. He had a midrange jumper, was a physical presence, could block shots, and before his knee problems, he could get up and down the court.
