Steve Mills gets demoted

Steve Mills was responsible for hiring both Isiah Thomas and Anucha Browne Sanders so it was only a matter of time before Mills would be held accountable for one of the most embarrassing periods in Madison Square Garden history.

Today, Mills was replaced as president of Madison Square Garden sports by Scott O’Neil, who enjoyed a long stint with the NBA. A press release issued by the Garden said that “as part of the reorganization, Steve Mills becomes president, business operations, MSG Sports Teams, reporting to Mr. O’Neil.”

The Garden was held liable for sexually harassing Browne Sanders, a former top executive. Browne Sanders accused the Garden of firing her in retaliation for her complaints about the alleged harassment. The lawsuit alleged that after Browne Sanders’ lawyer told Madison Square Garden of her complaint, Madison Square Garden forced her out of work while it investigated the situation. Madison Square Garden says it fired Browne Sanders because of “an inability to fulfill professional responsibilities.” However, Mills had repeatedly given her glowing evaluations.

The trial caused a rift between Mills and Thomas, who continues to claim that he never sexually harassed Browne Sanders. Privately, Thomas blamed Mills for giving Browne Sanders too much power in the organization.

Isiah still flexing the juice card. No mention of Dolan in the piece.

Wow, demoted to president. Tough for the guy... wonder how his ego will manage.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I said months ago they should hire Russ Granik, but O'neal came out of the league office and that satisfies my intent.

Dolan listened to the Commish or someone intellegent and is letting qualified people run the show.

Mills is an idiot and has not cred. He is in the dunce corner with the other idiot Isiah.

Perhaps DunceBury can join them soon.

I hate the money thats being thrown around but Dolan is doing what needs to be done and changing the culture.

I gotta give him credit for making these moves.

if Dolan wants to change the culture for the better he'll fire himself & appoint a new owner for this franchise.

Steve Mills is a great, great man. He hired Isiah and Anucha? That was a once in a lifetime, legendary pairing, the likes of which I fear we shall not see again in our lifetime. Last summer was the peak for this franchise.

A peak? You're clearly holding your chart upside down.

Not at all. Anuchagate? Marbury's interview on Mike'd up? The Jetbury incidend? It'll be a long time before this franchise tops that.

Can we not relive this again? It was funny at first - now it's just embarrassing.

It's a good step. As was already said, it's long overdue.

I can't believe that scrub Balkman getting traded gets six pages and this is at one... Mills hould have been straight-up fired, but at least he can't mess up basketball operations anymore.

Both Mills and Isiah were demoted but neither really fired and let go. In any other organization both would have been long gone. Dolan is keeping them on the payroll.

Ratner said Mills’s job would continue to place him in charge of the Knicks’, Rangers’ and Liberty’s marketing, community relations and in-game entertainment. He lost his oversight of player personnel duties and autonomy when Donnie Walsh replaced Thomas as team president, Ratner sai

This sounds a lot like Anuchas old job!

At this moment, Im starting to like Dolan. At least the little Sh!t is a consistant prick in bad and in good. Isiah and Mills can walk anytime, but they gotta leave the money.

I think people don't talk about Mills b/c he never brought himself out in public with the media like Checketts and no one was really sure just how much he did or was responsible for. Was he just an extension of Dolan? Was he just a figurehead while Isiah made all the decisions? Was the decision to bring in Isiah his or really Dolan's? One thing is for sure, Mills was a gutless executive who didn't accomplish anything positive in his tenure and presided over one of the worst run organizations in recent memory. Time for a new career Stevie.

i don't think mills made any actual basketball/hockey personnel decisions. i think he was more involved in the business side of things but he was the guy that put isiah and anucha in their positions of power.
