Maybe send one to Orlando for Reddick or some other team where they have a young player that isnt a good fit--or possibly future 2s etc...

Sure absolutely. I don't think Balkman is at risk to be cut unless (as suggested) his head isn't screwed on straight.

As far as Collins goes, he's a good kid, smart, has all the right attributes except ability.

But yeah, both should garner some value (for example, Devin Hardin, who remains unsigned, is a possibility).

I don't think either has value. Balkman's lack of a jumpshot kills him because his size requires him to play the three. There are plenty of hustle guys out there who can't shoot so I don't think at this point the Knicks could get anything for him. Mardy needed to have a good summer league. Summer league games are generally dominated by guards and Mardy did not look good. He is marginal with good size and character but also lacks a jumpshot. Both of these guys are playing for their careers this year and if they have a future it will be as bench players.

I consider Collins to have more useable skills than Balkman. You have to love Balkman for his D and hustle, but he has not improved his game at all during his years on the Knicks. Still can't understand why he did not spend his entire offseason shooting jumpers and developing some kind of offensive game. With a semi-consistent shot he could have been a bit like Posey. With Balkman on the court you free up the player guarding him to play helping D against other Knicks.

Collins can do some things well, but his outside shot is still sporatic and since he won't be playing on a regular basis, he will not really have an opportunity to improve it.

For these guys, the SL was a chance to show that they could shoot, and although Collins showed some flashes of an improved jumper, I would say that neither has trade value at this point.

Let them play on Gallinari's old Italian team.

I disagree about Balkman. His defense is not just good, it is game changing. Plus, if you leave him unguarded, he is smart enough to slash to the basket or go get the offensive rebound. He would have to be on a team with other shooters, but the kid has value as a defender. Collins showed this SL that his shot is improving. He greatly improved his free-throw shooting. He still needs more experience, but really, I think he is a solid backup pg prospect. He will never be a starter, but I could see him running a team for 10 minutes and providing defense. I think both of these guys have some trade value, not alot, but some. A jj reddick would be the ideal type of player we might be able to trade for. I will say that I am disappointed in Balkman because he has so much potential to be more of an impact player but it does not look like he is committed to improving his game.

Balkman will be left unguarded on offense on every possession unless he is handling the ball.

Here is an interesting post from RealGM. Might be more than what it appeared to be Briggs:
livintoolive wrote:The Warriors article got me thinking, is it possible that Walsh is trying to turn around one of the non-guaranteed contracts to a team on the edge of luxury tax for a young prospect? It would help the other team save almost 12 million if they get under the luxury tax threshold by trading away a young prospect for a non-guaranteed then cutting the player. I can easily imagine a team such as Phoenix doing this and possibly even throwing in a first rounder for that kind of financial relief! Of course the Suns don't have any prospects like that (aside from Robin Lopez, who I think they'll keep).

Of course, I'm just trying to rationalize this trade in my head.
