When Mardy was mentioned to Mike D, during the interview for todays game, he didn't say much about him. His respose about Mardy was tempered while he didn't hold back when talking about Chandler. That basically leads me to believe that Chandler is in the plans and Mardy most likely isn't unless he wows Mike D in fall.
Mardy doesn't strike me as a Player that Mike D would be a fan of. Mardy doesn't really push the tempo, and is not a good shooter. When talking about his guards, Mike almost always mentions shooting, and the ability to push and share the ball. Mardy shares the ball, but he lacks in the other 2 categories.
Just gonna talk about the same thing but Uptown beat me to it. D'Antoni gushed over Chandler ("he should dominate on both ends, nobody on the court has as much talent") and Robinson ("he's gonna be a regular rotation player") but seemed undecided on Mardy. He said things like, "we're gonna have to see how the roster shapes out," not a good sign, although he did acknowledge a little later that he's having a good summer league, calling him a smart player who was taught well at Temple under Chaney.
Myself, I've always loved Mardy's game. He's big, heady/crafty, has great hands on defense, more than a decent passer, and always looks very smooth and in control to me. More pluses: He's lost more than 15 pounds, appears to be over the knee problems and also looks much more comfortable at the foul line. He's really seems much more confident at the FT line, shooting them with a noticibly higher arc than what I remember.
I agree that at first glance he doesn't appear to be a D'Antoni-type player, but I really have a hard time believing D'Antoni looks at Collins as a guy who can't help him win games. He's not flashy and it's obvious by some of the comments around here that he'll never be a crowd favorite but he's your classic glue-guy, a guy that gives you nothing but intagibles. I disagree totally with some who believe he's fighting to stay in the league - on the contrary, I actually think he's got a fairly bright future ahead of him. Whether he competes with Duhon for a starting role is unclear and really unimportant - I just wanna see the Knicks KEEP HIM and PLAY HIM. He can really help us in a lot of different ways....
