The Knicks have rejected a proposal from the Clippers to trade power forward Zach Randolph, league sources told SI.com.

Terms of any proposal were not known, but the Clippers have enough salary-cap space to accept Randolph's contract without having to give the Knicks equal salaries in return. The Clippers, seeking to replace the departed Elton Brand, were trying to take Randolph off the Knicks' hands while offering little more than cap relief to New York, the sources said. Randolph will make $14.7 million next season, and he has three years and $48 million left on his contract.

While the Knicks are known to be interested in clearing cap space by 2010 to make a run at LeBron James or other potential free agents, the sources said New York wanted more than simple cap relief in exchange for Randolph. The Knicks appear to believe that Randolph will provide a highly productive season under new coach Mike D'Antoni, which could raise his value much higher than it is today. That's why the Knicks were not interested in nearly giving away Randolph's contract, according to the sources.

Other options for the Clippers would include pursuing Atlanta power forward Josh Smith or Charlotte power forward Emeka Okafor, but because both are restricted free agents, the Hawks and Bobcats can match any offer.

Damn, this is a gamble. Bold, but could prove costly if Zach continues to disintegrate. I like the idea of not just accepting whatever junk is thrown at us, but at the same time moving Zach could go a long way in asserting some financial responsibility and focus.

Man, I hope they know what their doing if this story is true; but I agree with the premise, Zach can be a commodity, he's a baller but his trade value is rock bottom. Why sell low? Summer of 2010 is still 2 years away.

Damn enter key.

Anyway, I don't like game playing but I have to agree that this could be a BS story leaked to try to get not just expiring but something tangible along with expirings.

I agree with the latter statement, though, DJ, if it's true we turned down such a supposed salary dump - and it's not a purposeful attempt to gauge value, then yeah it's not a good thing.

Zach is clearly a terrible team mate on the court. Any statistical ability aside he's not a winner and he doesn't make anyone else a winner. Zach plays for himself. Looks great on paper, looks like a flaming bag of dog poop in reality on the court.

I'd KILL to reverse the trade. Gimme 09 expiring + Frye back.

since the clippers have cap space, then moving zach to them would mean the knicks get a trade exemption in return. a pretty darn big trade exemption which translates into an expiring deal they could use up to 1 calendar year from now.

and if they chose not to use it, they just dumped $17+ mil from the 2010 cap. plus probably increases curry's value at the same time.

i know the knicks are idiots, but they're not this stupid hence why this has 27 degrees below celcius level of truth.

I don't see this as a leaked fabrication - any GM could just call the clippers up and say did they actually refuse your offer?

Zach is a solid player and might have a tremendous year under D'Antoni, but the simple truth is there isn't enough court for Zach & Curry to co exist.

If this has any truth to it, Walsh should be shot!

Imagine how FRYE could have actually increased his value under D'Antoni also... Perfect Center for Dantoni!!!

This isnt a local rag, nationally respected publications aren't supposed to get hoodwinked like this.

Its not a wild stretch of the imagination that the Clippers would do something like this. We've theorized it around here for a minute; it makes sense for them, plus their not the franchise that is associated with smart, sound transactions that pay dividends.

Somebody in the Knicks organization might have balked at bringing back Timmy.

i don't buy anything about any of these rumors from any publication unless someone comments on it hence why i think it's bogus.

there is no chance in hell the knicks wouldn't have dumped zach for cap relief - i know this for a fact. trading zach is #1 on the "to do" list. they want to keep curry over zach.

Not if you think you can rehabilitate Zach's image in 08/09 by him having a monster year. Not only do the Knicks want cap space, but perhaps they want something tangible in return in case of the likely scenario that Lebron doesnt come here.

walsh has said time and time again that he wants to be a player in the 2010 free agency market. what you said can be true but i know for a fact that their #1 priority is to move zach. that's why this is BS.

lebron will come to ny if he wants to, regardless of who's here and who's not.

Zach is not a team player. He gives you double double but that's about it.

He doesn't play defense, makes mucho $$$$ and bi**hes when he doesn;t get the ball.

Get rid of the dude!

There would be no point in leaking a rumor by the knicks to increase Randolphs value though. If teams feel they would have to trade more then cap space for Randolph they would more then likley get scared. If they were really trying to increase interest they would have leaked that they are in talks with Clippers about unloading Randolphs contract for salary space. Then if teams were interested they would have tried to undercut Clips.

Maybe it was a leaked rumor by the Clippers to decrease Randolphs value and scare other teams away.

If Walsh did indeed reject this trade, he should leave.

I am sorry but this reeks of Isiah.

Why in the blue **** would you turn down an opportunity to get rid of the only giant contract you can barely move? Big year under D'Antoni? This is a disgrace.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.
