of course... I think Wally actually improves the team next year (good shot is a plus in Mike D's system) and improves the team in the future with his expiring contract. No brainer for NY

Malik is 7.1 million of the books for the Cavs + plus they get two young strong defensive players in Collins and Balkman.
Essentially you are trading Balkman and Collins for a 7 Million dollars off the cap in '09....

I am for freeing up the roster spaces because I think Donnie and Coach D have a nose for signing strong role players that play in Europe (like Bryan Colangelo has been doing the last 2 years in Toronto).

i would but do u think CLE would do that? i guess it's more feasible than any of the Zach trades when u consider the cap.

That's a wash on contracts basically giving Balkman away. I don't see a role for Wally past his contract for us.

I would do that in a heartbeat. Wally is the best player in the deal and he specializes in a skill we need.

Honestly I think at some point we are going to have to decide between Chandler and Balkman. I think Chandler is Balkman with offense.

Clearing 2 roster spots is also ideal for us imo. Take some chances on some cheap talent.

the same was true of the Zach deal.

why would cleveland make that deal? How does it makes them better a team?

Also, this does not look like it works under the CBA. Need to modify the trade so it works.

This is a pointless trade all around. It doesn't improve the Cavaliers or our financial situation in 2010. Q expires in 2010, Malik in 2009. If we are going to trade for expiring contracts, it would be wise to deal someone like Curry, Crawford, or Zach.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

You beat me to it... The focus should be to get rid of Jeffries... He sucks and is on the books with plenty of years left.

Donnie Walsh is still trying to fill some of New York's needs and could look to acquire Wally Szczerbiak from Cleveland in order to provide perimeter shooting, according to Newsday.

The Cavaliers are rumored to be shopping Szczerbiak with the Nets reportedly having declined a deal that would have sent Wally to New Jersey for Vince Carter.

Szczerbiak's contract will expire at the end of the upcoming season.

agree that should be the focus but that also makes it a much less attractive trade to make from the Cavs' standpoint.

Looks like your idea of getting Wally may become a reality according to REALGM.com

Walsh plans on staying involved in all of the talk but likely will put more emphasis on making smaller moves to improve specific areas of the team, such as perimeter shooting. Long Islander Wally Szczerbiak is being shopped by the Cleveland Cavaliers ( the Nets reportedly declined a trade that would have sent the rapidly declining Vince Carter and his hefty contract the other way), and he fits in so many ways. Szczerbiak is an excellent shooter and, perhaps just as important, he has an expiring contract.

RealGM is quoting Hahn who came up with a Szczerbiak idea on his blog. There is no reality.

If there is any chance of signing Lebron in the 2010 summer, I'd say don't kill it by making Cleveland better. Not that this deal does that, but its a thought to keep in mind.

Now, the art of getting an expiring contract, in case of a team searching for cap relief, is dealing long contracts away, and in our case, any contract longer than 2 years. So this trade only makes sense if you want to have a better team for next season and shoot at the chance of having a low record and a high draft pick.
