I just came to this amazing realization that the Knicks are obsessed with top draft picks... FROM OTHER TEAMS. I think there's been repeated attempts by Knick management to acquire former top draft picks with damaged reputations/bodies.

I assume the hope is to unleash some of their untapped potential, locked away because of injuries, bad coaching, the wrong system, etc.
These of course are players that had been highly scouted during their college careers. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Layden is currently rumored to be after LaFrentz and Bradley.

LaFrentz was the #3 pick from Denver in 1998.
Bradley was the #2 pick in 1993.

Let's look at this Sprewell trade.
Van Horn was the #2 pick in 1997. (note that it was rumored Sprewell could also have been traded for BigDog, the #1 pick of 1994)

How about Camby for McDyess?
McDyess was the #2 pick in 1995. (note that we traded Camby, the #2 pick of 1996!)

What about the Mase trade?
Remember our old pal LJ? He was the #1 pick of 1991.

True... I see the pattern too.

Well LayDown will be the first kid on the block with the #1 pick in 2004.

If only the Knicks gave a damn about raising players.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

If only if it were as simple as adding water and watching players grow. :)

The NBA draft is not an exact science. You can't pick just any player and hope he develops. Unless you're among the very worst teams in the NBA or VERY, VERY lucky in the lottery, your team needs to have some good scouts in the field who can judge potential.

I think the Knicks made some wise moves, trading away their young players over the years--- showcase them and move them before other teams realize that it just ain't gonna happen. For over a decade, we were among the top 6 teams in the league, so we were left with 1st round picks in the 20s. At that point of the draft, it's basically a crapshoot.

We did well by trading these late 1st round picks for veterans that could contribute. These young guys we've traded are worth more to us as trade bait than as players. There usually 2 or 3 surprises per draft, but usually players drafted this late amount to journeymen at best.

We've always prescribed to the technique of letting players develop on other teams... then snatching them when they're ripe. Of course, the luxury tax is detering this tactic to some extent now.

Now that our team is mediocre, our draft picks are much more valuable to us. Now it might be worth investing time developing our players. 1-15, you're dealing with players with higher upside and fewer questions.

Techno, seem to be it's a Owners Preference, Layden wasn't around for every trade the knicks made to bring in Former high draft picks with bad reps or past injury background.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

Yeah, it seems to be part of the Knicks Management mission statement.

"Let top-5 draft picks develop for other teams, and pilage them while their trade value is down, that is our motto."

Layden is just following in the footsteps of his predecessors.

You know, I don't think I saw that pattern...other than the Mase trade...I remember thinking that we'd never be able to get LJ for Mase had he not been injured. And even LJ at half-power was a force...

always felt bad for him.

Anyway, good observation, Techno.

Not if McDyess comes back this season averaging nearly 20 pts and 9 to 10 reb. Knicks would definitely make the playoffs, not the lottery

I feel that whether McDyess makes it back or not, we still have a chance to be a playoff team. There is the not-so-off chance that Lampe earns a place in the starting lineup, ahead of Sweetney, Harrington, and Spoon.

Looking at last year's top 2 ROY candidates, they "only" averaged like 13ppg/8rpg for the season. I don't think those numbers are out of the realm of hope for Lampe and/or Sweetney, though I'd be willing to be we'll be seeing much better production at the top of the class from Lebron and Carmelo.

I think Lampe and Sweetney have skills more akin to our team needs than the players they'd potentially push out of the rotation ('Spoon, Harrington, Knight, Doleac). I also think that Van Horn can be productive, possibly even our top scorer if utilized properly.

With a return to form from McDyess (20/10 production), you can pretty much book us a ticket to the finals. :) Without him, I still think we're in the playoff hunt.

I dunno, if we dont get big at the 5 to fill up the lane, we're in the same position as last year... if Dyess gets healthy we'd probably get the playoffs but how far we advanced is the big question... man thinking about it I'm not even thinking playoffs, I'm hoping the knicks push a deal or a contract for a 5 sometime soon as we might have gotten bigger at the 3 but we've also gotten less defensive on our perimeter where eastern conference has a slue of talent at those spots, we're gonna need someone to fill up the lane considering how much the knicks are gonna be penetrated on this year.. :)
