Duhon, Free From Bulls, Visits the Knicks
By HOWARD BECK
Published: July 2, 2008

Chris Duhon visited the Knicks’ suburban training center on Tuesday, making him the early favorite to fill their need at point guard.

Duhon, 25, has played his entire four-year career for the Chicago Bulls, but he does not appear to be in their long-term plans. The Bulls have a glut of guards and last week selected point guard Derrick Rose with the first pick in the N.B.A. draft.

The Knicks need a true point guard and may view Duhon as the eventual successor to Stephon Marbury. Marbury, who has one year left on his contract, has worn out coaches and teammates. He could be traded, waived or bought out before next season.

Duhon is being pursued by several teams in need of a backup point guard. But his decision to visit with Coach Mike D’Antoni on the first day of free agency seemed to be a promising sign for the Knicks. Duhon, a steady ball-handler and solid 3-point shooter, is viewed as a good fit in D’Antoni’s system. He is also an above-average defender.

Another option could be emerging, although it is surely a long shot. Monta Ellis, the Golden State Warriors’ gifted young guard, is also a free agent and is believed to have an interest in the Knicks. But there are several obstacles.

The Knicks are over the salary cap and would have to acquire Ellis — who could command about $10 million a year — in a sign-and-trade deal. Also, committing to a contract of that size would conflict with the Knicks’ stated goal of saving cap space for 2010. Finally, Ellis is a favorite of Warriors General Manager Chris Mullin, who is determined to keep him — particularly in light of the Warriors losing Baron Davis.

Ellis’s agent, Jeff Fried, declined to discuss his client’s intentions.

“We’re in the midst of some meaningful discussions, and Monta is extremely interested in being part of a team that has the growth potential and solid foundation that is consistent with his own game and character,” Fried said Tuesday.

howard beck has been posting more rumors lately... i can't imagine we'd have anything to tempt the Warriors with, after they lost Baron Davis. still, for beck to publish such a rumor, the interest might be real on monta ellis' part.

dlee + craw for ellis in a s&t? not sure if that even gets it done and those are our two biggest trade assets at this point.

It definitely sounds interesting. I would think that the Warriors would have to be atleast interested in Lee and I suppose they would want Crawford in return becuase they need someone to man the point. I'm not sure this deal makes sense for the Warriors though. I mean Lee makes sense for them but losing Ellis and replacing him with Crawford or maybe Nate? That doesn't make too much sense to me.

I'll gladly do any deal that involves Ellis though, the kid is an awesome offensive player.

Yay. A 6'1" shooting guard who plays no defense. Just what we need. Didn't we have an all star 6'1" shooting guard who plays no defense and we want to run him out of the city? Come on now.

Sounds like Ellis just wants to squeeze more $ out of the Warriors.

I know Ellis doesn't play a ton of defense but he is a very unique offensive player. Besides.. he's 6'3, not 6'1

Ellis would be a nice pickup the kid has game. He also can play both position from the point to the shoot guard. The Warriors system did not call for him to play point because they have many ball handlers. He also is a guard that shoots like 50%. The guy rarely misses shots and he is a smart player.

I second the no thanks to an undersized shooting guard sentiment. Monta Ellis is an exciting player, but not a main piece on a contending team, sorry.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I could see a PG taking less money for a year or two with the Knicks, but probably not this dude.

Also, I'd rather have Pietrus than Ellis. He seems like he'd be a perfect fit for what the Knicks are trying to do.

I proposed going for Monta a few weeks back... and from that proposition I learned no one thinks the Knicks really have what it takes to get him, and that was when the Warriors had Davis.

He is much better than any current Knick player. But this whole article is stupid and makes no sense--were not getting Monta Ellis as in 0/100 so for a paper like the NY times to print this is nuts.

I think we could get Pietrus for Crawford in a heartbeat. Crawford is much better, but I just don't think he'll ever be a winner. I don't know about Pietrus either but he is a stronger defender and can shoot the three. But what kind of contract does he want?

Ellis shot 23.1% from 3 point range last year. His 3 yr total avg is 28.5% from 3 pt.
He just doesn't fit in. We need a shooter.

Yes his FG % is around 50% which means he must be getting lots of layups and short shots.

Agreed - a Crawford plus Lee for Ellis = the Knicks give up too much.

How about these scenarios?

Craw and Lee for resigned Ellis and Al Harrington?
Craw and Lee for resigned Ellis and Anthony Randolph?
Craw, Lee and Nate for resigned Ellis, Anthony Randolph and Marco Bellinelli?
