Even stronger are rumors that the Grizzlies are talking to a number of teams, including the Knicks, Blazers and Suns, about deals that would send the No. 5 pick to whomever is willing to take Brian Cardinal's awful contract (2 years, $13 million left). The latest buzz has the Knicks talking to Memphis about a deal that would send David Lee and the expiring contract of Malik Rose to Memphis for No. 5 and Cardinal.

In other words, it sounds like GM Chris Wallace is, once again, being pushed by ownership to cut payroll.

I like that deal. You're essentially getting a top 5 pick for Lee which is more than you could ask for. Who cares about Cardinal? His contract doesn't take up 35% of the cap like Zach's and could be moved again. Hopefully it's true BUT if we're to be taking someone like Kevin Love there then hell no.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

I'd love it. The contract ends just in time, so it doesn't hurt us. Lee's a very good player, but the fifth pick in the draft is incredible value.

Then we'd double up on UCLA products w/ Love & Westbrook.

Holy ****, that would be ****ing awesome! I would then try and use pick 5+Nate to trade with Minnesota, who apparently love(love) so we can take Mayo.

In the end we could have Mayo and Westbrook OR Mayo and Alexander!

I don't know about moving Lee and expring for the 5th pick, but it'd almost certainly mean we could get Mayo or Love and give us an outside shot at both.

If this is legit sure but I have a hard time believing it when their own paper says

Trade rumors spinning as NBA Draft draws closer

By Ronald Tillery (Contact)
Memphis Commercial Appeal
Sunday, June 22, 2008

The rumor mill is churning in advance of Thursday's NBA draft, and the Grizzlies appear prominent among teams most likely to wheel and deal.

Trade speculation has the Griz attempting to move up from their fifth pick and 28th selection in separate deals.

A potential transaction involving the Miami Heat and its No. 2 selection has the most traction -- except the Grizzlies have not offered the No. 5 pick. Guards Mike Miller and Kyle Lowry and the Grizzlies' No. 28 pick are all in play as the team explores a way to make a splash in the draft.

It is perceived in numerous NBA circles that Miami doesn't covet Michael Beasley, assuming that Derrick Rose goes No. 1 to Chicago. So one theory is that Miami would select Beasley at No. 2 regardless, and try to swing a deal from there.

Reportedly, Miami wants Memphis' Miller, Lowry and the fifth pick in exchange for Beasley and Mark Blount. The Heat, however, also is insisting that the Griz take on Marcus Banks, which is another obstacle in any potential deal.

The Griz don't seem inclined to move the fifth pick, and would rather include the 28th selection along with players in any transaction.

Another deal rumored to have legs on draft day is one that would have the Grizzlies sending the 28th pick along with Lowry to Denver in exchange for the No. 20 pick and possibly forward Linas Kleiza.

The theory behind this deal is that Memphis would like to move up in order to select Western Kentucky guard Courtney Lee, whose workout in Memphis was every bit as scintillating as the others he's participated in around the league.

Stay tuned.

Sounds like this rumor is coming from our camp feeding Fraud some BS because we know we want nothing more than to have the 5th pick. Why Memphis wouldn't be inclined to include the 5th pick to land Beasley but are willingly offering it up in a deal to land Lee and Malik just to get rid of 2yrs of Cardinal?

No way would I do that unless Mayo dropped to 5. Love isn't nearly good enough to trade Lee for. If Love is lucky he'll give you the 14-10 that Lee will in D'Antonio's system.

I'd rather trade Lee for Memphis' unconditional #1 next year and Cardinal.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

This sounds like a stretch. Not that this is the strongest draft, but that seems like a lot for David Lee and minimal cap room.

Edit: Although frankly, there's a chance that there might not be anyone as good as Lee at #5 either. My God, this is such a weak draft at the top.

As much as I like DLee I think this would be a great deal for us. We can then suck it up with Zeddy until their value goes up.

This isn't even close to believable. It's an obvious no brainer if true. What happened is we may have been one of the teams Memphis contacted trading the 28th pick with and of course this gets spun into Memphis possibly offering up the 5th pick to us. Not to mention how many other teams can trump that offer.

I agree. The only part that's slightly believable is if you think this is a weak draft. But as a general premise, teams usually get stars (read: better than David Lee) in return for a top 6 pick.

This is the same team who traded Gasol for Kwame and Crittenton. It's believable.

how does it cut payroll?
By taking the draft pick you have 4 years of restricted salary
David Lee is going to be paid around 9mm the following year

Why leave out Marc Gasol rumored to be better than his brother Pau, the 28th pick, and a future first rounder from the Lakers.

No this isn't believable.

That wouldnt makes sense--they probably could find a team like philly who would take cardinal for nothing with their cap space for the 5 pick.. The only thing that would make sense is that by removing Cardinals salary spot--it paves way for Lee

The main reason I dont think this is BS is simple. Good things dont happen to the Knicks. We are never on the advantagous sides of trades, we are usually the ones getting brutally raped. So Im not even going to allow myself to think that we might actually get two top six picks.

...

That being said, can you imagine if we did? Crazy...

Cut costs. They can get Lee and then trade him for future picks. Theres alot of things they can do with David Lee after making this trade.
