The Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors have held discussions about a possible trade involving Jermaine O'Neal and T.J. Ford, according to reports in the Indianapolis Star and the Toronto Star.

The Raptors -- eager to move an unhappy Ford and make Jose Calderon their starting point guard -- also would include center Rasho Nesterovic and possibly their first-round pick in Thursday's draft, both newspapers reported.

One sticking point might be O'Neal's health. He played in 42 games last season because of a left knee injury, though Pacers officials said recently that O'Neal is healthy, according to the Indianapolis star.

O'Neal, a six-time All-Star, averaged 13.6 points and 6.7 rebounds a game last season, and is currently working out in Las Vegas.

The six-time All-Star is spending the summer working out in Las Vegas.

A second issue might be the financial burden O'Neal poses. He is set to make $21 million this season, and $23 million in 2009-10.

Multiple reports surfaced this past weekend about a possible trade that would have the Raptors sending Ford and their first-rounder (No. 17 overall) to the Phoenix Suns for forward Boris Diaw.

Yeah we're discussing this in the Rumors thread. It would be a good move for the Raps.

Then can we scoop up Tinsley. I know his contract is not appetizing, but we have more than our share of unappetizing contracts to deal.

Tinsley sees the boys in blue almost more than a donut shop. No thanks.

helps the raps. doesn't tie them up long term, gives them a sizeable expiring next year, and more importantly, gives them a big that can play center, rebound and defend to help out bosh. but after this deal, raps would have no other assets to improve their team this summer. they would have about $40 mil of their cap tied up with bosh/o'neal/jose.

That's what the Jamrio Moons, Anthony Parkers of the world are for. JC is known to get bargain players to play for his team. Plus he has the MLE and LLE to work with along with Kapono and possibly Bargs.

He needs to demand the Pacers second round draft pick and start buying other picks in the draft with cash.

to get to jermaine's $23 mil, they would have to trade tj + parker + rasho. pushing the limits of the salary tax, they won't be really able to used the MLE on a big time impact guy.

They'll probably have to pay the tax to keep Jose but getting O'neal if he stays healthy makes them a playoff team that could advance out of the first round, which would more than make up for any tax they'd be hit up with.

They can get about $10mil under the projected threshold with such deal, before any signings take place.

a trade of Marbury & the #6 for JO @ the #11 makes more sense for the Pacers IMO than Ford & the #17... they can easily draft themselves a bigman like Love or Lopez at #6 to take JO's spot on the roster by going this route... the Knicks can add the defensive bigman they need & draft a PG at #11 like Westbrooke or Augustine.

Just got through listening to Bosh on the radio 590am about J.O. rumor. He's on board to acquire him.

if bosh is talking about it...then this rumor has legs.

wouldn't be surprised if indiana leaked it just to gauge the approval rating of it.

Bosh said J.O. definitely would be playing center then laughed and said because he's finess and J.O. is power. Man Bosh sounds like a really laid back cool dude and he clearly understands Toronto's situation all but saying they have to make a move.

at times they could put a bargs/bosh/o'neal frontline out there. that's some crazy matchup problems there.

if raps can make this deal and convince jr smith to go there for the MLE, then colangelo would have to get an A+ for the summer. not sure if jr smith is his type of player tho (off the court).

The Raps play-by-play man along with Hollinger said Bargs needs to park it on the bench and come off of it. They both sounded like Bargs better get it together. I think he'll be used to play off of Bosh and O'neal instead of with them both but you never know, this is a game of matchups.

Sounds like the Spurs are going to put the full court press on J.R.

o'neal makes $21.352 mil next season. (owed $44.347 mil total)

to fit within 25% trade restrictions, raps must send salary next season from $16.1 to $26.7 mil.

tj makes $8 mil (owed $25 mil)
rasho makes $8.4 mil

so tj + rasho = $16.4 mil for the 2008/09 season which falls within the 25% range to get o'neal. no other player would be required.

this deal also saves indiana $10.947 mil. therefore, i do not believe the #17 pick is involved.

oh yeah...bargs better step up this season.

but swirsky is no longer the play by play guy in toronto. he moved to chicago for "family reasons" and is now the play by play guy for the bulls on radio.

Source: Toronto-Indiana deal off
By Adrian Wojnarowski

Talks between the Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers about a trade that would have included Jermaine O’Neal and T.J. Ford fell apart on Monday afternoon, a league executive with knowledge of the negotiations said.

For the past two days, Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo had been pushing the idea of sending Ford, Rasho Nesterovic and the No. 17 pick in Thursday’s draft for O’Neal. For a few hours on Monday, there was a sense that the deal was close, but ultimately concerns over the damaged state of O’Neal and Ford were too much to consummate the trade.

The Pacers were concerned about Ford’s future with his past neck injuries, but were willing to start rebuilding without O’Neal and the $44 million owed him over the next two years. O’Neal played just 42 games a year ago, because of a left knee injury.

The trade would have given Indiana the 11th and 17th picks in the draft, allowing Indiana to take a point guard and a forward. The Raptors have been one of the league’s most active teams in trying to move up in the draft, and they’ve made no secret about their desire to move Ford and make restricted free agent Jose Calderon the point guard of the future.

if TOR wants to move up so badly offer them Zach & the #6 for Ford, Parker & the #17... gives us cap space, an athletic SF, a starting PG & a pick w/which we can draft a bigman shotblocker like Jordan, McGee, etc.
