was expected as he wanted to play for spain.

some history...

colangelo signed garbo 2 years ago to a three year deal.
towards the end of his first season, he broke his leg in a nasty injury in boston.
he got surgery but toronto doctors wanted him to get a 2nd surgery.
he decided not to so he could play for spain in the world championships last summer.
he played for them against raptors wishes but the raptors got insurance from spain for his contract.
he started the season for the raptors but was still not healthy.
raptors wanted him to get a 2nd surgery and then he did, basically putting him on the IR the entire season.
he wants to play for spain in the olympics this summer.
so raptors decided to cut ties.

Garbo was pretty good 2 years ago, too bad this turned out this way. Do you think any team will risk signing him DJ?

raptors were upset about this...but colangelo said "what can we do? he's a grown man and it's not like they can control his offseason."

The Raptors made the right decision. If playing for Spain is more important to him than his nba career, then I wouldn't want to keep him.

I have never liked him as a player but... Garbajosa is 31 years old and I dont think he has to prove himself to anyone at this point, especially considering some strange things that happened to him at the beginning of the season regarding his playing time. As far as I know he is losing money by doing this. Im not sure Spain really needs him for the Olimpics, but I cant really blame him for sacrifying money and his nba career for trying to play with his national team.

there were some legal issues and problems with the insurance spain gave the raps for using garbo last olympics (btw, all of this was coming out of spain papers).

so it was a situation that was getting ugly so they decided to just part ways.

it's a shame b/c losing garbo was a big reason why they lost to the nets last season and he wasn't replaced on the roster this season.

Yeah these international players and their allegiances to their countries are becoming an issue. Yao Ming's next.

Actually he began the season with no apparent problems, just playing 5 mins per game without much of a reason. Suddenly, with no signs of pain on his ankle and while trying to figure out why he was not getting almost any playing time, the team tells him that he is badly injured and that he will miss the entire season, which he almost can not believe at the time. So yes, he got paid for doing what the Raptors told him to do, which was not to play. And now the raps will probably save some money. I dont think he was disloyal to anyone. Is not like he is going to the Celtics or the Lakers to win a ring like some other players with so much supposed "integrity" do. He is just coming home to get paid less money among other things.
