Multiple sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith that Terry Porter is the new coach of the Phoenix Suns.

Suns general manager Steve Kerr called Porter on Saturday morning to offer him the job, and Porter accepted.

Porter was interviewed twice, most recently on Monday.

The Suns had been searching for a head coach since Mike D'Antoni resigned to lead the New York Knicks. Other candidates included Houston Rockets assistant Elston Turner and former NBA player and TV analyst Mark Jackson.

here's a pic of suns fans reactions...

I don't think it's a bad choice. I think Porter got a raw deal in Milwaukee. The only bad part of it is, was it really a good idea to go with a coach with limited head coaching experience, to coach a veteran Suns team.

hold up one second...

kerr made a gamble move to bring in shaq to try and win a title.
now he follows that up with a gamble move of hiring terry porter to coach the team to a title?

i don't see how this is a good move at all...

The Bucks haven't really been the same without Porter I think this is a good hire. He's an intense defense first type of coach and he was that was as a player. DJ this is a good hire.

i cant see your selection dj. porter's record is 41-41, and terry will now have the players to show he is the proven one.

I actually agree with DJ. I think I would have gone with a coach with more experience instead, even though I think Porter would make a good coach. If I were Kerr I wouldn't mind giving Avery a look. I don't think he's as bad as people are making him out to be.

I like terry porter, but not over d'antoni for the suns. the shaq deal was terrible, this doesn't really seem like an improvement over d'antoni, overall i think kerr has been doing a pretty bad job...it'll be interesting to see who they draft

i think Porter's as good a hire as any coach that was available to them... other than Flip i don't see who they could have gotten w/more coaching experience... Silas has been away too long & i feel Porter is a respected guy that will resonate well w/the veterans on that team over a rookie head coach.

The Suns should have just made Steve Nash the player/coach. I can't really see any coach coming in and telling him to play any differently than he has. But if I was a Suns fan, I'd be pissed at this hire.

Good to see Terry Porter land another coaching gig. Milwaukee was very impressive until they lost four of their five starters for nearly the season. How Terry got blamed for then sucking the rest of that year is beyond comprehension.

However I don't know if Phoenix is a good stop. Very high expectations there but then again Porter never was afraid of anything.

I would have liked to see us go the true rebuild route and give Porter his 2nd chance at the same time but can't do much about that now can we.

I hope he does well.

We are going the true rebuilding route its just that we have a true coach to guide the young players in the right direction. Not some coach who hasn't even coached a game like Jackson. Porter is a good coach and I would have no problems with him if he were to be the coach of the Knicks but I like D'Antoni much better.

kerr is trying to capture the same thing dallas did by replacing nelson w/ avery.

but porter hasn't been around the team for the past few years and he has 2 HOF players on the roster already.

is porter the coach that's going to get them over the hump b/c the way the roster is built, they still need to get over the hump...unless they realize that they must start divesting.

should've went after van gundy w/ a big pay day for 1 or 2 seasons.

btw, i don't care about porter or his coaching ability. for all i know, this could work out great.

but it's a poor managerial decision by kerr imho, b/c it's a major risk for a team trying to win before they deadbolt the window shut in another 12 months.

PHOENIX -- Terry Porter will be the Phoenix Suns' next coach, ending the club's monthlong search for a successor to Mike D'Antoni.

Phoenix general manager Steve Kerr said Saturday he had agreed to terms with Porter, who was an assistant with the Detroit Pistons.

The 45-year-old Porter played in the NBA for 17 seasons and teamed with Kerr in San Antonio.

"He's got a great combination of leadership skills," Kerr said in a telephone interview. "He's a great communicator. And his coaching experience, two years as a head coach, is important to me. The fact that he's sat in that chair, that was a key factor. He's very tough-minded."

Porter is expected to sign a three-year deal worth about $7 million, and he likely will be introduced at a news conference early next week. His hiring was first reported by ESPN.

Porter was the only one with head coaching experience, with two seasons at the helm of the Milwaukee Bucks.

"We interviewed some great candidates, and we wanted to take our time and make sure we made the right choice," Kerr said. "He's the right guy, and I'm glad to have him on board."
