Dude, you're on top of your ****. I was just about to mention this.

This is Keith Law's take on ESPN.com:

This is a great pick; he fell to the Yankees for financial reasons. Cole has the best arm among the prep pitchers in the draft. He has a loose, quick arm. He has the best fastball of the high school pitchers; it tops out 97 mph. He needs more consistency on the breaking ball. And he needs to just throw his changeup instead of guiding it. He's a high-ceiling arm that could be a No. 1 starter. If that doesn't work, he could be a dominant reliever.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

Cool- I was thinking we might take a power hitter, but I'm down with this.

my favorite part was hearing Peter Gammons' bitter reaction talking about how high ceiling prospects w/agents like Boras looking for big signing bonuses will eventually fall to the 5th round to teams willing to pay the fare.

c'mon Pete, you woulda been gizzing in your panties if the Red Sox picked this kid... as it turns out his team took a kid who already committed to playing QB at Tennessee next year, but he seemed very excited about it.

#44 pick - Compensation round:

Jeremy Wyche (sp?) - LHP / Stanford (sorry got the last name wrong... it's Bleich)

good, we need some more lefty arms in our farm system... now i hope we pick up a Catcher & 1B at some point in the later rounds.

Yankees draft fireballer in first round
Righty Cole goes No. 28; Stanford lefty first compensation pick

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees selected right-hander Gerrit Cole on Thursday with their first-round pick in the 2008 First Year Player Draft, using the 28th overall pick on the hard-throwing hurler from Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, Calif.

Cole, 17, has been clocked in the high-90s with his fastball and, as a top high school prospect, has drawn comparisons to current Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes as one of the best Southern California products in recent years.

"Gerrit has a big, strong, projectable body with a high ceiling," said Damon Oppenheimer, the Yankees' vice president of amateur scouting. "He throws a power fastball with sink in the 94-98 [mph] range and has also developed a good changeup. He's a competitor every time he takes the mound, and he pitches with a lot of confidence."

Listed at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, Cole went 8-2 with a 0.47 ERA as a senior at Orange Lutheran this year, striking out 121 batters in 75 innings, allowing 13 runs (five earned) and walking eight.

Labeled as one of the top prep arms in the draft, Cole is weighing a scholarship offer to attend UCLA for the 2009 college season and is represented by the Scott Boras agency.

Cole is expected to incorporate mechanical tweaks once he begins the next phase of his career, and he could see his future development come as either a starter or as a closer. He was ranked by Baseball America as the ninth-best pitcher in the First-Year Player Draft and the 17th-best prospect overall.

Though Boras' representation has played a factor for some smaller-market teams not inclined to extend large contracts to prospects, New York has not been shy about pursuing Boras clients in recent years; first-round picks Ian Kennedy (2006) and Andrew Brackman (2007) were also contracted with Boras.

With their Compensation Round A pick at No. 44, the Yankees selected junior left-hander Jeremy Bleich from Stanford University. A product of Metairie, La., Bleich was drafted for the first time after being limited to five games in 2008 at Stanford, battling tendinitis from March through mid-May.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound southpaw was 2-2 with a 1.09 ERA, allowing four earned runs in 33 innings and striking out 26 while holding opponents to a .189 batting average. He closed out the season with a stretch of 14 2/3 scoreless innings.

The Yankees were provided with the compensation pick to select Bleich for losing right-hander Luis Vizcaino to the Colorado Rockies via free agency this past offseason.

"We were really pleased with both of our first two selections," Oppenheimer said.

The Yankees were represented by Tino Martinez at the Draft, held at the Milk House at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Earlier in the day, the Yankees made a symbolic pick when they selected Emilio Navarro in the Negro Leagues draft as part of the ceremony to commemorate the historic league.

At 102, Navarro is the oldest living professional baseball player and was the first Puerto Rican to play in the Negro Leagues. Known by the distinctive nickname "Millito," he played shortstop and second base for the Cuban Stars in the Eastern Colored League from 1928-29.

In the first round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, the Yankees selected Brackman from North Carolina State, signing him to a four-year Major League contract in August. Brackman is slated to miss all of the 2008 season as he recovers from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery.

Here is a look at the Yankees' selections on Day 1 of Thursday's First-Year Player Draft:

Round 1: Gerrit Cole, RHP, Orange Lutheran High School, Orange, Calif. Cole tops out in the high-90s and sits in the mid-90s with his fastball, and he could project as either a starter or a reliever when he begins his professional career. He was 8-2 with a 0.46 ERA as a high school senior.

Compensation Round A: Jeremy Bleich, LHP, Stanford University: Bleich was 2-2 with a 1.09 ERA in five games for Stanford as a junior. He also played with the USA Junior National team in 2005 and earned Cape Cod League All-Star honors while playing for the Wareham Gatemen in 2006.

Round 2: Scott Bittle, RHP, University of Mississippi: Bittle was 7-1 with a 1.78 ERA and eight saves coming out of the bullpen for Ole Miss in 2008. In 70 2/3 innings, he allowed 35 hits and 15 runs (14 earned), walking 30 and striking out 130. A product of Texarkana, Texas, Bittle also lettered two years at Northeast Texas Community College and was named an All-Conference selection.

Round 3: David Adams, 2B, University of Virginia: Adams is a hard-nosed type who has drawn comparisons to Jeff Kent as an offensive player who is steady defensively. Adams hit .286 (66-for-231) with six home runs and 51 RBIs in 61 games for the Cavaliers in 2008. He was taken by the Detroit Tigers in 2005.

People are saying Bleich may be a bit of a reach, but he is a lefty, and he was supposedly hitting 93-94. Bittle is a reliever that they actually drafted in the late rounds last year, so you know they've been following him. He supposedly has a great cutter, so hopefully he'll get to work with Mo before all is said and done.

The other exciting pick was in the 6th round- Brett Marshall, another high upside pitcher. He is short, but supposedly has a tremendous fastball and a lot of people have compared him to Roy Oswalt. Was ranked as a top 100 guy and we got him in the 6th.

We've definitely drafted heavy on pitching for several years now. Would've liked to see some power hitters, but we'll see how things work out.

i think the reasoning is we can always sign a power hitting bat if need be, but good pitching is hard to come by... i think i agree w/that line of thinking... we should also be drafting some C prospects cuz Jorge won't be around forever.

We drafted a bunch of catchers last year I thought. Most of the power hitters in our system are those high upside international guys we sign that are filling out their frames. Hopefully a few of those guys fill out.

yeah like that kid outta Cuba/DR Juan Miranda... he's playing 1B for AAA Scranton right now... sorta like 1 of those Shelley Duncan types, no real position but has a power bat... much higher ceiling than Duncan tho obviously, but who knows how he's gonna pan out... he could turn out to be the next Hensley Meulens.

a little more on Gerrit Cole:

http://www.nypost.com/seven/06152008/sports/yankees/yanks_glad_to_have_this_boras_client_115504.htm
YANKS GLAD TO HAVE THIS BORAS CLIENT

June 15, 2008 -- CALL it the Scott Boras Effect. With the 28th pick in the June 5 First-Year Player Draft, the Yankees New York Yankees selected Orange Lutheran (Calif.) High School right-hander Gerrit Cole. Considered the top high school pitcher heading into the draft, Cole was the No. 17 overall prospect, according to Baseball America.

But thanks in large part to a $7 million price tag Boras floated to keep Cole from his commitment to UCLA, he nearly slipped out of the first round before the Yankees snagged him.

"I don't know why other people passed on him," Yankees vice president of scouting Damon Oppenheimer said. "I'm sure people have concerns about certain players' representation, but when we saw him there, there was no way to pass that up."

Mike Grahovac, Cole's coach at Orange Lutheran, first saw him throw a bullpen as a sophomore two years ago. That was all it took for Grahovac, a former minor league catcher, to realize the potential in Cole's right arm.

"He's the only kid I've seen that I only had to see him once to realize he was special," Grahovac said.

The 17-year-old Cole, who is 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, went 8-2 with a 0.47 ERA this season. He allowed five earned runs in 75 innings, striking out 121 and walking 18. Along with a fastball that regularly hits the mid-to-high 90s, Cole throws a slider and changeup, and has been called the best Southern California right-hander since current Yankee Phil Hughes Phil Hughes .

A scout who had seen Cole over the past two years felt he was a top 10 talent in the draft.

"He's got a special arm," the scout said. "He's only 17 years old, and he's throwing 99 mph. He's got a feel for the change, too. . . . He could potentially have three plus pitches."

Gary Purcell's Norco HS team handed Cole one of his two losses, beating Cole 1-0, but the opposing coach had nothing but praise for the young right-hander.

"He was better than anything I've seen in a lot of years coaching," Purcell said. "At this stage of his career, he was the most overpowering of anyone I've seen by far. In our game alone, he hit triple digits at least three times."

Though teams didn't want the headache of having to deal with Boras, there also were questions about Cole's demeanor on the mound, and toward his teammates, heading into the draft. The scout, however, didn't see it as a problem.

"I don't think it's an issue," the scout said. "I kind of like it. You've got to have some confidence, attitude, even some ****iness to a degree. I don't think the kid's a jerk or anything.

"He's a 17-year-old kid who's had a lot of publicity. He's a confident kid, and he should be."
