If we are considering putting the team back together piece by piece wouldnt a 20 year old 7-0 260 pound skill player have to be someone we seriosuly consider? Is there more potnetial TEAM upside with a pick like this if he was available at 6? or if we could swap picks at 4 etc...

The perceptions that:

-he'll struggle to finish at a high %
-he's not a top rebounder
-he's not a fit in MD's running system
-now you have 3 low box players which for 08-09, or until we can dump one of the 2 fat slobs, picking BLo worsens the problem

I definitely think Lopez will break the trend of the vaunted "pac10 big man" but I'm not so sure I want him.

He has some nice 1 on 1 moves, but looked like he'd have fits the second he faced some help defense.
How's his passing for a big man BRIGGS?

Matt, I know you asked Briggs, but I'll answer myself. Lopez is a very good passer for a big man. After watching Stanford a bunch of times this year, thats one thing that stood out to me. I don't care what draftsites tell you, when I saw him, he was definitely an able passer.

Thanks for the insight nyk - that's a bit of a relief to hear. There's just so many ways this draft could go. Whether a guy like OJ drops, or we choose Westbrook/Randolph/Lopez, Walsh will have several options.

I might be a little disappointed with a Lopez pick after so many people crying bust so soon, but I would not be upset if that is indeed the choice. After falling into the Morris Almond hype this time last year, I'm actually glad we did end up picking Chandler. I'm willing to trust Walsh/D'Antoni and wait to see how the pick turns out next year.

So far, I think Westbrook (unless OJ falls) is still my #1.

Best part about drafting Lopez would probably be the end of the Eddy Curry project.

Not sold on Brook - he moves to lethargically, doesn't rebound well, doesn't block shots and shoots a low %.

Big thing that scared me off him was his initial comments at the pre-draft interviews.

Asked what he's been working on most - he said "my shot - I'd really like to be viewed more as a 4-5 player instead of just a center". I would have preferred to hear him say he was really working on his legs to improve his rebounding and shot blocking skills and also working on multiple post moves because watching him about 7-8 games this year all he does is turn to his left shoulder. Same as big Eddy.

With the sixth pick, you hope to get a top player to build around. Brook will have a long nba, but not very special nba career. I think he needs to get stronger to hold inside position in the nba.

He would be a great mid 1st round pick. I think we can do better at 6.

not really too into brook lopez. i'll be pretty disappointed if we don't come away with Westbrook, Randolph or Mayo (if he slips). I'm willing to keep an open mind, but it seems those guys would really fill needs, fit what D'Antoni wants to do and compliment the keepers on this roster.

Bust written all over BLo. A big man that shoots a low %, is not average rebounder and defender --> that sounds like a 2nd round pick to me.

What's Defense?

I dont follow college ball too much, so maybe Im missing something. Why is this guy even projected to be a high lottery pick? It seems that everything I hear about this guy is negative.

It's almost unfair
with 7 footers.
I think it takes a real keen eye with 7 footers to judge the potential talent and also to understand that big men take the LONGEST in terms of maturing as a player. That being said Lopez is certainly a nice skill player for a 7 footer as is Mcgee--LOpez is bigger and more refined so he is the number 1 C prospect. We view the cobines of 7 footers running and jumping next to 6 footers and then we say slow--well 7 footer who weigh 250+ pounds ARE going to be slower than smaller guys---Yao Ming plods up and down the court but wed all take him in a second. Lopez is good--does he need work--yes but he's got a lot going for him.

IF we dont draft a C wat i want to do is get Patrick Obryant on our SL team immediately. PO was rather dominate in the D League and played for a coach[nellie] who does not want true 5s---that s what got him fired in NY. If you draft a big you have to give him 3 years--if he's going to do well you really should see signs by year 2--3 at the most but you have to committ to that since these guys are coming out so young.

Sounds like Chris Kaman without a motor.

Wasn't that the logic behind the Channing Frye pick? Not that Channing was great - but he was the safe big man choice at that pick.
