AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The Detroit Pistons say Flip Saunders will not be back as coach next season.

"Decisions like this are difficult to make," team president Joe Dumars said on the team's Web site. "However, at this time, I feel it is necessary to make a change."

In his three seasons, the Pistons were 176-70 in the regular season and 30-21 in the postseason, but they lost in the conference finals each year.

Saunders had a year left on a four-year deal he signed in 2005. He replaced Larry Brown, who won a title in two trips to the NBA finals.

He has a career record of 587-296 in 13 years with the Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Pistons are officially the Atlanta Braves of the NBA.

Man how could Dumars fire a guy who improved their offense and got them to 3 straight ECF?

The Phoenix Suns should hire him, matter of fact every coaching vacancy that's out there all should want Flip. He gets his teams to the playoffs and they play an open style equal opportunity basketball under him. I'm sure players like playing for him. Man if he was available back when we needed a coach he would have been a great hire.

don't know of a coach out there that's better than flip for the job. i don't think avery is the guy.

this might be an indication of a major shakeup w/ the roster. i think sheed + rip are prime candidates to be moved and they turn the reigns over to assistant coach curry.

Flip is sounding better than D'antoni right about now. Thank you Walsh, for rushing to conclusions.

How is Flip a better candidate? He's won just as much as D'Antoni.

He seems to have a better balance of offense and defense, whether or not he inherited a more defensive oriented team as opposed to D'antoni. And the 3 consecutive ECF carries more weight than what D'antoni accomplished in Phoenix.

He had to ? How so ? He's GM and team president, who forced him to rush ? Don't tell me it was Dolan.

Flip is a good coach. Detroit doesn't have Big Ben to dominate the boards & patrol the paint down the stretch of games. While Sheed, Prince, Rip, Billups play great man to man defense. Sheed, Prince, Billups also stretch the court with there ability to knock down threes while Rip kills in the mid range. Billups also can get into the paint so offensively they are pretty set. They are just missing that defensive presence in the paint that Big Ben provided.

Joey Dorsey will be there for them late in the draft for them . They should go after Marcus Camby though.

Hey dude, don't you remember all the big media talk about Walsh within days of bringing jax aboard? It sure seemed like it! Hype or not, the word was out there and suddenly, D'Antoni came out of nowhere and saved us.

i think flip isn't as bad as every thinks. i think he overachieved for the most part with subpar minny teams.

detroit needed larry brown to get them over the hump. flip ain't larry brown but he's not a slouch either.

Overall I agree with this analysis. I'm Doing Me.... putting it out there in that if Flip was available and Donnie was looking to hire him most New Yorkers would Flip Out. There would be some who may like him here as a couple have already suggested but overall we'd hear about how Flip has failed and is a Retread.

Flip Ain't LB as we discussed a couple days ago.

I agree about the shakeup, but I think the guys they'll move are Sheed and Prince. Their guards are set with Rip, Billups and Stuckey. Unless they think Stuckey should start, in which case I think they'll move Billups before Rip.

Yes, I clearly "remember all the big media talk about Walsh within days of bringing Jax aboard", but how does that support your idea of Walsh being rushed to hire a coach ? That's my only question to you. Are you saying the media pushed Walsh into hiring a head coach ? Highly unlikely, and if that is the case Dolan hired a GM/President who succumbs to the ridiculous NY media. And as far as D'antoni "saving us" goes, I think you and I can both agree that its way too early in the game for that. We'll see about that next April.

Old man Davidson makes dumars his puppet.

I think a good job when a coach "coaches" to what he got. MikeyD will be tested to that, and I think flip also did that with the pistons.

Suites Flip fine to get a paid vacation and collect the mean old mans money.

I thought Flip did a good job with that team that is running out of gas.

Rip is their best scorer and a VERY good one. If he was much more selfish, he could average 25 PPG. They shouldn't even think about moving Chauncey or Rip unless they get something outstanding in return.
