Derrick Rose: Michael Beasley is better than MeBy Ira Winderman | Sun-Sentinel.com LAKE BUENA VISTA - The debate over who will be the top pick in the June 26 NBA Draft might not be a debate at all.
While he wouldn't say that Kansas State power forward Michael Beasley should be the No. 1 selection by the Bulls and that he should go No. 2 to the Heat, Memphis point guard Derrick Rose said today he considers himself second to one.
"It's definitely him," Rose said of Beasley, when asked about which was the superior player. "He's way better than me. He's versatile."
Rose and Beasley spoke a day after forward Joey Dorsey, Rose's teammate at Memphis, said he knew Beasley would go No. 1 to Chicago and Rose second to the Heat.
Rose said it wasn't because of anything he told Dorsey.
"He was just in the arcade room and I was just asking him what was he thinking when he said that," Rose said with a grin. "He was just playing around. If anybody knows, it wouldn't be Joey."
Neither Rose nor Beasley said they had any insights into the draft order.
Beasley laughed off Dorsey's comment.
"Oh yeah, Joey, he got this car to take him to the future sometimes," Beasley said with a smile. "He must have just got back from the future."
While Rose said he has yet to establish a workout schedule, Beasley said he already has sessions planned with the Heat and Bulls.
Heat President Pat Riley said today he has yet to finalize workouts with any projected prospects for the No. 2 selection. He also discounted reports that the Bulls and Heat had agreed on a 1-2 order of Beasley then Rose.
"Don't believe any of this stuff," he said. "We're communicating with them, but we haven't set any definitive schedules up."
Beasley said he could envision the Heat interviewing other prospects for the second pick beyond himself and Rose.
Southern Cal guard O.J. Mayo said he could see himself landing with the Heat. He has been working out in Chicago alongside Heat guard Dwyane Wade, with the two eating lunch together Wednesday in Chicago.
"It's great for me to be able to pick his mind a little bit, ask him questions about his early years in the NBA," Mayo said. "He's a great person. He's totally a great guy and I'd love to play with him."
Interviews with Rose, Beasley and Mayo could be as deep as the Heat takes the process.
Stanford center Brook Lopez said he has workouts scheduled with the Timberwolves, who pick at No. 3, and the Sonics, who pick at No. 4, but nothing yet with the Heat.
Arizona guard Jerryd Bayless, another player considered a top-five possibility, said he saw no reason for a workout with the Heat, "since they know who they're going to get."
Riley, though, insists his team is considering several options.
"There's a consensus that everybody talks about," he said, "but there's some other guys that really light up your eyes when you look at them." http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basketball/heat/sfl-rose0808a,0,5532903.storyNice tidbit on Mayo and the Heat. I'm having more confidence in my selection. [Edited by - TrueBlue on 05-30-2008 12:30 PM]
