There are 2 threads that are currently up discussing Sergio coming to the Knicks. Just curious how good you guys think this kid will be? I got a chance to watch a lot of Blazer games this past season & I personally think he has an extremely bright future ahead of him. True PG with superior passing skills that can score when he has to. Goes to the rim well, comes off curls to hit quick release/line-drive mid-range jumpers with ease, can hit the three. In addition, has an exceptional handle, good speed and quality defensive instincts that produce many deflections. Above all else, he's always looking to both push the ball and set up someone else FIRST before looking for his own. Can't imagine any player in the league having a problem playing with this kid. The type of player who WILL MAKE OTHERS BETTER - very rare in today's NBA. True he can get a little flashy but not nearly as out-of-control as you've heard. Actually plays the game with a lot of fundamentals for a modern pro PG. I think he could lead the league in assists one day - that's how highly I think of his court vision and passing skills.

Some comparisons that come to mind:

(1) Close to Tony Parker or at least Mike Bibby in terms of overall talent - just not as offensive-minded himself, a little more pass-first mentality
(2) As talented but much less out-of-control version of a younger Jason Williams
(2) John Stockton without Stockton's grit and toughness at this point
(3) Steve Nash just not as automatic with the jumpshot
(4) Similar but much more talented than Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar, Luke Ridnour

This kid could really help us. If Portland is interested in moving the 13th pick along with this kid, Walsh has really got to listen long and hard. Am I nuts or are you guys with me on this?

Believe it or not that's probably fairly equal value right there maybe even more in the Knicks favor. This isn't a bad idea at all - we get a quality young pass-first PG to run D'Antoni's system to perfection and pick 13 that we can turn into an impact player. Portland gets to move up 7 spots in arguably one of the deepest drafts in a long time.

I'd probably prefer to use pick #6 & Curry to move up in the draft then use a Lee package to go after a Sergio/pick #13 deal first, but if that can't be done, this ain't bad nyballer.

#6 to Portland for Rodriguez, #13 (JaVale McGee??), purchase another pick from someone for a quality shooter (Shan Foster??). Sign Justin Williams to a summer league deal to fill the vacant Lee role. Not bad.

My question is why he didn't get consistent minutes last year. Jack & Blake are okay, but certainly not immovable objects at the PG pos.

Personality clash with Nate McMillan more than anything else. McMillan didn't think he was playing hard enough in practice and sent him a message by giving his minutes to Taurean Green. McMillan's rumored to be a hardhead too and a tough guy to play for. Means very little though. Latrell Sprewell choked out PJ Carlesimo and wanted to beat him with a 2X4 because of stuff said during practice - we get the guy and he was great here, wind up going to the finals....

How come nobody ever says, "if sergio is so good why doesn't portland just start him, har har har"?

It baffles me cuz the dude is clearly better than anybody else they have. Its the old "he's my guy" mentality. NBA teams screw certain players and purposely do not trade them for years....for what reason? I dunno. Sergio is one of those guys. Add Charlie, and Lowry to that list.
