This is part of a Newsday story regarding Baron Davis, but since Ellis is a much better fit for us, I thought it deserved it's own thread.
Ellis, 22, also might look to explore other options when the July free-agency period begins. A league source told Newsday that the athletic combo guard, who has flourished in Don Nelson's fast-break system, definitely has eyes for Mike D'Antoni's up-tempo style.

The cap-restricted Knicks, however, could give Ellis only an offer sheet at the mid-level exception. The Warriors could match it but wouldn't have much left to give Biedrins a raise above his $3.6-million qualifying offer and add seven more players. Or the Knicks could look to acquire Ellis in a sign-and-trade.

The questions are, of course: Is Walsh willing to use his mid-level exception when he's trying to get under the cap by 2010? What would the Warriors want in return?

Jesus, if you can get Monta Ellis for the midlevel you HAVE to do it. By the year 2010 he might be one of the top players in the league.

29 other teams can offer him the MLE. There's a reason his name and our name are rumored. If he comes here it's 100% certainty not for the MLE.

With all that said, there are teams going to offer Ellis alot more than the midlevel, so he'd have to really take a paycut to play here.

If you look at the market--if I was Monta's agent--I would ask for a maximum contract. How many players in the NBA average 20 points 5 rebounds 3 assists shooting 50%--Id like to comp that one. Same reason why David Lee's agent is going to ask for 55MM--he's going to comp him

This kid's very good, one of the steals of the 2005 draft. But with Nate Robinson here I don't see why we would need this kid. He's a flat-out scorer. Period. But undersized and while he has unbelievable skills to score the ball, what else? A guy like Nate Robinson, though, can do a few more things out there for you. Ditto Jamal Crawford. Ditto Jerryd Bayless, the guy I want in this draft badly. Gonna get a lot of money.... Tempting because he's young and a tremendous little scorer but I'd pass if I were Walsh & co.

If it took a max contract to get him, I'd pass. There are too many weaknesses in his game. He is still about 22, so he may improve his all around game. But you don't give out max contracts on upside.

The problem with that is that he's much better than a midlevel player.

20pts/5rebs/4assists/1.5steals/53% from the field?

Thats atleast 10mill a year player.

I don't think they'd trade Monta Ellis. And frankly, why pay money + assets for Ellis when we could just draft Westbrook. Are they really that different?

You know what, thinking about it, this kid is really good. Incredible scorer. Awesome slasher, can finish with both hands, decent shooter with range, above average handle... Truth be told, he is better than Nate and Crawford. I still think Bayless, by comparison, will have the more complete NBA game eventually, but this kid is a monster in the making. Sort of reminds me of a young John Starks - only even more athletic and even better going to the rim. Who am I kidding, of course I'd be interested. I just don't know how the Knicks could ever pull this off. It would have to be a sign and trade and outside of David Lee (Golden State could use some rebounding) I don't know who else we have that would interest them. This kid will get a real nice contract, bigger than what Lee will get...

Like I said, tempting as hell. But in the end of the day, the Knicks must stay the course. Acquire youth and remain cost-efficient as a team. If something can be worked out for the mid-level, great, Monta Ellis is worth it, probably more than even JR Smith or a Gerald Green. And unless the Knicks can work out some kind of crazy frontloaded deal for him in a sign & trade they can't jepordize their cap space for the summer of 2011. Not even for this impressive newcomer.

You're seriously going to sit there and compare one NBA tested player to a collegiately tested player ?

Fin, Starks had a good jump shot and was good defensively.

Well I see what you're saying Ira but to me there are some similarities there. Very reminicent of a young John Starks with the hops before he fell in love with the 3-ball. This kid Ellis can shoot from 20', from 3.... he just appears more comfortable taking the ball to the tin. And you're right, Starks was better defensively.

the logic would be to fill that need w/a trade & then free up the pick to take someone else... i dunno what it would take to get Ellis frankly or if the Warriors would even give him up for anything less than the pick to begin with.

I guess if and when David Lee hits the market some other teams will be able to snatch him up for the MLE, maybe even less.
