Draft: Go after Russell Westbrook (with the intention of developing him as a shooting guard) as a priority - take him at #6 if necessary. Look into getting another pick in the 8-12 range using Curry as bait and without giving up Lee - maybe Eddy Curry + Balkman to New Jersey for Stromile Swift, Trenton Hassel + #10. Take Joe Alexander.

Cut Marbury and let him run wild in the mountains. Don't sign anyone. Evaluate players next summer when ideally their values aren't below zero, as they stand now.

Next years unfinished small ball lineup:

Jamal Crawford/Nate Rob
Russell Westbrook/Hassel
Joe Alexander/Wilson Chandler
David Lee/Swift/Malik
Zach Randolph

Next summer - trade Randolph. Draft a point guard.

Westbrook & Alexander are both: extremely coach-able, athletic guys whose best basketball is ahead of them. Nicely done.

Code, how come you want to use Westbrook as a SG? His speed and ability to run the point are perfect for D'Antoni's type of system.

Code... Double D's don't plan on being in the lottery next yr. I'm not saying Westbrook shouldn't be an option at 6 but you definitely shouldn't make the pick based on next yr. If D'Antoni lands us in the lottery next yr Mark Jackson could have done the same.

I think Westbrook might be this year's Kirk Heinie.. a guy many are supprised to see go in the top 7. I would have no problem with that.

Good thing Donnie Walsh is the guy making then decisions and had said multiple times that they won't mortgage their future. Either that or you think D'Antoni is going to do one hell of a coaching job to get this team to about 40 wins.

Same old, same old here with you.

The nets won't take curry. Nenad krstic owns him anyway.

Getting another pick some how would be a good idea......sheet maybe 2 extra picks.....there are a lot of guys in this draft I want on the knicks. Joel and westbrook are definately 2 favs.

39 wins is what I think Pringles can do with the stars aligning properly but from his own mouth he said he isn't planning on being back in the lottery. D'Antoni is on record for saying missing the playoffs would be a personal huge disappointment. We're trying to make the playoffs plain and simple whether we personally feel it's a bad or good thing therefore you shouldn't draft the 6th pick with next yr in mind of landing in the lottery. It's ABC 123 logic. You make pick 6 for who you think can help contribute in large way to making the playoffs.

Well, a couple of things. First, I'm not sure where you got the idea that we should make the pick to enhance our position in the draft next year. There are several other options we can use to solidify that position, including cutting Marbs and trading Randolph, which don't involve passing on top-tier talent. In my estimation, Westbrook is the best talent in the draft behind Beasley, Rose and Mayo. So you take him at 6 regardless of who opens up next year.

Second, D'Antoni is a pretty good coach, who's been painted incorrectly as a one-dimensional fastbreak evangelist that needs to win now. Mike went sharply against the grain with a small-ball system that was appropriate for the players he had; players, except Nash, that had won less than a third of their games the season before he took over. He won big despite a very flawed and unconventional lineup that featured no defense, no center and in his second season, no Amare Stoudemire. And he developed everyone including Nash, Stoudemire, Diaw, Barbosa, and Joe Johnson. As I'm hinting, D'Antoni wasn't or, at the very least, shouldn't have been brought here for next season, when the lottery should be the agreed upon destination. D'Antoni's goal here is to extensively develop the talent thats brought in for the purpose of playing real basketball in 2010, a year, by the way, in which we won't have our 1st round pick.

Nyk, I think Knick fans are so hungry for the next great point guard that sometimes they want to funnel players who don't quite fit the mold down that more unconfortable path; splitting the fork in the road, so to speak, to comboguardville. I like Westbrook as a pure slasher, a guy that can really paralyze his defender off the dribble, chart a route through the defense and either find an open man or finsih over a second defender. Reason's against him playing point guard - 1) Westbrooks handle isn't quite on the elite level where I'd be comfortable with him as a primary ball handler for 48 minutes. 2) I'd prefer to think about getting to the basket every time he touches it as opposed to roaming with the ball and directing an offensive set. 3) I think 3-point shooting is essential at the lead guard spot to decompress the defense - and Westbrook's range doesn't quite extend there just yet.

I think that, if necessary, Westbrook can slide over and play the 1 reasonably well. I'd be more inclined to make that move if you can get a special player at the 2, a guy who can shoot from range and guard effectively both on the perimeter and in the post. My preference would be to pair him with a big point guard but where he eventually plays will depend on our other personel.
