Patrick Ewing Might Be Knicks' Assistant
May 16, 2008 - 7:02 am
New York Daily News -
Knick coach Mike D'Antoni said on Thursday that he may hire former Knick great Patrick Ewing as an assistant coach, the New York Daily News is reporting.

"I know what he did in New York and I know that he's done a good job since he left," D'Antoni said. "He will definitely be considered."

I think he should bring Ewing back to teach Curry and help increase his intensity - he did it with Yao and Howard, I think he can do it with Curry. If he finds that Curry isn't coachable then they should just move Curry and get another big man (easier said than done) who can be taught.

I think it'd be great to have him back, and I agree I'd love to see what he can do with Curry before we give up on him. I personally don't have a lot of love for Curry, but the man has talent and can score when on his game. He can really be a devastating finisher and in the uptempo game I think he can get a lot of easy baskets/dunks like Amare did. If we can get a guy to work on his footwork and be more aware on defense it'd be a major help. Patrick Ewing pretty much knows all there is to know about the center position as far as positioning, running the floor, pivot footwork, shooting etc. He may be softspoken and a little aloof in terms of the media, but he clearly has gotten his message across with Yao and Howard. You could see tangible differences in their games after Ewing worked with them (specifically offensively with Yao- he learned quite a few Ewing moves, and on an awareness level with Howard). It's not too late to unleash Curry- I think he's lazy, but he's not a bad apple a la Randolph and there is some rehabilitation that can be done to make him a very useful cog (though I think its very fair to concede that he won't become any kind of star- and since this new regime is not one that put all its eggs in his basket I think we'll be more willing to take the pressure off now).

The only question I have now is whether Ewing wants to come back here. He has a good gig now and can build quite a stellar reputation with an ascending D. Howard that would lead him to a head coaching gig. Deep down, I'm sure he wants to come back to NY, but there is part of me that thinks he's tired of being spurned and should do what he needs to do to get the job he ultimately wants.

People need to stop thinking Curry's demeanor will automatically change with Ewing. A guy has to have the passion. Ewing worked with guys that wanted to work hard like Yao and Dwight. Curry is just a fat lazy slob who doesn't care about the game. I hope D'Antoni takes one look at him and tells Walsh to trade him.

I am not sure if now is the time to bring Ewing back. I think if Herb is an assistant you can't bring Pat back. Both Herb and Pat are pretty laid back guys and D'Antoni is a players coach. I am not sure I understand Herb being kept. He does not seem to be a great basketball mind or motivator of players. He is not the big man coach and I don't think he is the guy who breads down the game tapes. I don't really know what his role is. I may be underestimating him but I have never have understood how he has remained an employee of the Knicks for so long.

I would love to get rid of Herb. I think Ewing would be a better choice. We desperately need someone (BIG, who did it himself) to teach these big guys, curry, Zbo, James & Morris to play some defense. In this case, I would take Ewing.

D'Antoni may bring Ewing back.
