Do we need to be under the cap in 2010, or do we merely need to have cap flexibility

Was boston under the cap to get Ray Allen & KG? Or did they simply have lots of young, attractive assets that they could move.

Rhetorical, yes.

But, if we are going to be players in 2010 for LeBron, is he going to sign outright, or is he more likely to force a S&T?

Granted, it helps to have room outright, but I think its just as important that we have a roster full of appropriately priced, attractive players.

I still think the best way to get your superstar is through the draft.

a S&T for what tho? is there anyone on this roster CLE would even want in a S&T for 1 of the top 2 players in the NBA? the only way the Knicks will ever get Lebron is by signing him outright, or if we draft someone like Derreck Rose & he turns out to be a franchise stud & combine him w/some expirings & a pick or 2

I think we need to have cap room. Remember the moves Grunfeld made before acquiring Childs, Johnson, and Houston. I think shooting for LeBron is fine but I also think you have alot of options with cap space if LeBron stays in Cleveland.

it ain't just Lebron... there's a few other guys that will be on the market that the Knicks would do well to at least have the cap room to try & lure to NY... even if we can't lure any of them we can always fall back on the S&T option for other players that will be on the trade block... handcuffing ourselves now w/big longterm deals is just spinning our wheels in the same crap we've been stuck in for the past decade.

ny with major cap room in the right summer could be dangerous.

but very few upper echelon players become outright free agents. they usually sign extensions the summer before the end of the contract (when they are first eligible).

the key is kind of weird but every season, you must hope to have something in the ballpark of $10-15 mil in expiring contracts. boston does not get KG unless they have ratliff. (and credit ainge for trading a lotto pick + lafrentz for ratliff, which got them the expiring).

You need cap flexibility, IMO. You can't have 12 free agents and expect a big FA to just sign here. You have to have some type of core in place.

The money is safe in a few players we want to get rid of. Wait for the time to come and we will free that money up and go after LeBron.
I'll never trust this' team again.
