Walsh, however, has remained conspicuously silent over the past week, which is odd for someone who has promised, among other things, to reform the Knicks' media policy. Thus far, the Knicks are still operating under James Dolan's code of silence, which has turned Walsh's coaching search into a media feeding frenzy where misinformation, confusion and chaos reign.


Many of those executives were relieved when Van Gundy took his name out of consideration for the job. Instead, he endorsed Jackson, who could be the type of no-nonsense disciplinarian the Knicks need. But perhaps Walsh, like many of the executives working under him, prefers the easygoing, non-threatening style of D'Antoni.

In my opinion Walsh has not changed much. His first job was to get rid of Isiah. He did not totally do that. He also said that he was going to change the media policy. Obvioulsy that has not been the case to this point. He also said that he has total authority over basketball operations. If the Knicks outbid Chicago to get D'Antoni I have to think that Dolan had a major role in selecting the Knicks next coach. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Don Chaney ran the Knicks' shootaround Wednesday while awaiting word from team president Isiah Thomas on whether Mike Fratello will be New York's next coach.

The New York Daily News reported Wednesday that Fratello will take over, but Chaney was at practice as the Knicks prepared to play host to Orlando on Wednesday night.
