Why do you think it is that in baseball & football, guys have to bide their time whether scouting or coming from the negotiation side of things (especially in the NFL w/ the cap), long before they are ready to become GMs.

Yet, in the NBA, ex-players like Paxson, Mullin, Ainge, McHale, Isiah, Dumars and perhaps Kenny Smith assume the GM role with little to no experience.

Maybe the number of positions on the field in baseball and football make it more complicated and requires a larger range of experience?

baseball + football require alot more maintenance. baseball has an entire farm system + active roster of 25+ players that must be put together. football has 40+ roster that needs to be acquired with multiple draft rounds from a huge pool of players.

basketball doesn't really have a minor league system that needs to be developed for each team and we're only talking about 12 players. so it looks like the nba gm's job ranks 3rd compared to the other 2 in terms of being educated in the field.

Five of those seven won championships, so they had pull. But this is such a small number to use as an example. Maybe you should do an entire research, to find out how everyone who was ever a GM, became a GM and what their background was in relation to the NBA. I for one would like to see something like that. I'm sure there have been some favoritism through the years, but a lot of those guys went through the ranks to get to where they got.

I like people who have a lot of experience myself and even more so is they where winners. Now don't start in on me again about D'Antoni. I am just so sick and tired of people coming here who haven't proved a damn thing.

That's the way I feel and I say that in a nice way.
I'll never trust this' team again.

GM in NBA is more like a car salesmen. Required to bring attention of the press and general public.
Also he must be well connected with "right" people to do the talk.
No technical skills required.
