This, IMHO, is a very realistic scenario, given the way Layden thinks.
It's simple. The Knicks do not buy out Ward's contract. The Sonics sign Elden Campbell for a matching amount (maybe a 2-year deal), and bam, trade him for Ward.
Winners: The Knicks: Layden gets to spend a little more money for a guy he could potentially get as a FA outright. Knicks overpay, Layden happy! In addition, the MLE is still 100% intact!
Seattle: Gets a starting PG and some value for Campbell. Also keeps MLE.
Ward: doesn't get bought out and earns his full salary rather than $2 mil + whatever minimum wage he can draw-- has an opportunity to start for Seattle-- good pass-first type of PG/leader.
Campbell: Gets more money than he probably deserves-- has an opportunity to be a starter on the Knicks and regain his form against weaker eastern conference opponents.
The Fans: Knicks get a legit center with a relatively short contract. He gives us size, a shot blocker, and post up presence... and gives us more size to compete with NJ... and the Lakers/Spurs. :) Gives us even more insurance should McDyess never make it back.
Losers? Well... both Seattle and Knicks pay a little more to keep their options open with their MLE's (so it's not a total loss...). Knick fans will groan if Campbell can't find his game-- and they'll complain about adding more salary... and about our rookies losing potential playing time.
This scenario would probably work if you swap in Booth or James-- not sure if the MLE from yesteryear is close enough to Ward's salary...
