First, I agree about keeping the room dark. I usually go to sleep around 2:00 am and wake up around 9:30. make sure you block out that early light if you work weird hours. So, dark thick curtains are a must when you're not getting up early. Do what you have to do to block out the light. The light will awaken you every time.
Also, alcohol is often counter-productive. And don't drink too much caffeine, and particularly don't drink caffeine too late (I know you have to stay alert, so this could be tough).
Now, on falling to sleep - here's my trick: Audiobooks. That's right. Personally, I like stuff with a lot of logistical detail - non-fiction, political, military (but you might prefer something else) It's like having someone read you to sleep. I prefer CDs or something that is time limited - I don't like to wake up four hours later with someone still droning on. (You could even listen to the bible, just to placate Playa

)
It's something you have to work on - you have to find something that works for you. By listening to something interesting (to me) I forget about other stuff and drift off to sleep. If you get a nice girlfriend, have her read you to sleep.

Good luck, and let us know how it's going. So long as you are doing a swing shift, it's gonna be tough.
I definitely want our law enforcement officers to get a good night sleep!
