I'm probably rather optimistic about this, but yes. I think we can get a playoff spot--- and once you're in the playoffs, anything can happen.

1) We did pretty well last year, given the circumstances. 37-45 was almost enough to get us in the game. Besides, we have an excellent record in the last 10 years of upsetting the better team (thanks to all of our wins against Miami).

2) If everyone manages to start the season healthy, we could get off to a better start... and hopefully roll with it.

3) From what we've seen so far in the summer leagues, it looks like our rookies might be able to contribute (from a little to a lot, it's too early to tell). Regardless, before even signing free agents, we have a bit more inside depth

4) If Sweetney/Lampe don't show marked improvement over the course of the next two weeks, the Knicks have dibs on McCaskill, who already looks to have more potential than Travis Knight. A free agent like Elden Campbell would give the Knicks a massive boost in talent (albeit erratic talent!)

5) Frank Williams is already markedly better, so at the very least, we'll get better play from our 3rd PG.

As far as the finals go, like I said, anything can happen in the playoffs. The Nets are still the Nets, with a little more depth, with Mourning joining K-Mart, Williams, Collins, and Mutombo.

I don't see any of the contenders really making big strides, with the big question mark being Detroit with the mystery Milicic (who may not perform any better than our young "Dirk" prospect, Lampe) and their new coaching staff. Truth be told, I don't think their roster was particularly talented last year either.

Orlando could make improvements with their big, athletic rookie PGs the addition of Howard, and a full season of Giricek and Gooden. At least there won't be any questions about Grant Hill (I feel bad for the guy, a potential HOF career down the drain). But... that all remains to be seen.

Stay tuned.

Outside of the Nets and Detroit, the east is wide open. I agree Detroit didnt have that much talent on their squad, but they play hard. Milicic is a good addition and he should complement Wallace. The Knicks can qualify for the playoffs if we get Frank to start and he plays well. Also if Lampe can contribute it will be gravy. Sweetney should be a decent player. Dyess is done in my mind, grant hill pt. 2....

Contend for what 28 other teams contend for , the NBA finals and championship
