The only competitive series is Philly and Det. All the other series are either 3-0 or 3-1.

The Western Conference playoffs have probably been the most disappointing. Stern can't be too thrilled I think the format must be looked into with strong consideration to change the format.

I will say the outcomes should be very telling what other teams do in the off-season. Some teams probably need to blow it up.

What kind of format changes do you have in mind?

I think there was a lot of expectations in the West series since you had top quality teams competing against each other. Those series have been one sided (although there have been exiting games) and the high expectation of closer series has caused disappointment.

IM surprised Denver has rolled over. That one had some nice makings of a great series. I know Karl gets a lot of crap but this one is on the players not stepping up. That team cannot have a heavy handed coach so I think Karl is a good fit, and the veteran team just does not respond.

Spurs rolling over the Suns is a surprise, I figured suns would give it them at least a fight.

Rockets seem to just fall into their playoff place for the last 5 years.

A few scenarios which have been mentioned by quite a few but probably will never be acted upon would be

Instead of 16 teams making it, which is over half the league and is a joke make it be 14 teams

Seed them according to their records, with exception to giving division winners home court over their opponent(eliminate EC and WC play instead have inner conference playoff matchups)

Have teams play the teams in their division more times over the season but split the rest of the remaining across across the league. In other words eliminate the 52(Conference)-30(Non Conference) season play

Go to a 2-3-2 First round playoff format to increase the competition in the first round.

how ever many teams make it, it should be the best teams with the best record, period. Golden State should be in it, they;ve earned a spot. The east sucks? too bad. It messes up parity of the league. Bad teams in the east make the playoffs, miss the lottery, and dont get good enough to win championships. The west has been dominating the post Jordan Era. Best 16, 14, or whatever, just let the best teams play each other.

True....those suggestions probably make sense, but they wouldn't make the first round any more exiting. Seeding the entire league instead of the conference would have made this years playoff 1st round even more lopsided.

Perhaps, but the first round should only be best of 5 games anyway. 7 games is too much.
Get it over with, round 2 would be really interesting.

That's why I said switch the first round to a 2-3-2 plus you have less trash teams in the playoffs. Which means no ATL, Philly. First Round matchups would have went accordingly

1.Boston
2.Detroit
3.Lakers
4.New Orleans
5.San Antonio
6.Houston
7.Pheonix
8.Utah
9.Orlando
10. Dallas
11.Denver
12.Golden State
13. Cleveland
14.Washington

First Round 2-3-2 format
1. Boston vs Washington(Boston Home Court)
2. Detroit vs Cleveland(Detroit Home Court)
3. Lakers vs Golden State(Lakers Home Court)
4. New Orleans vs Denver(Hornets Home Court)
5. San Antonio vs Dallas(San Antonio Home Court)
6. Houston vs Orlando(Houston Home Court)
7. Phoenix vs Utah(Phoenix Home Court)

The only problem is there is uneven pairing so you have to figure out who would play who in the next round. You could stagger the matchups and give the Top seeded matchup(Boston) the most lag

I liked the 5 game 1st round format better too, but with the $$ each home game brings in for each playoff team, I don't expect to see it changed.

I third that. I think the five game series are more exciting in the early rounds.

Besides, there's such a thing as too much basketball. The NBA is way over-exposed.

I don't think the playoffs have been bad. The series may not all be knotted up, but the play has been exciting in quite a few games.

Thank you Trueblue for making this thread! The playoffs have been total crap and unless something drastic happens I plan on turning off my TV come the 2nd round.

Killa, only problem is then the "argument" is that a bad team can defeat a better team in a short series belittling the regular season.

We can go on and on in this circle, but changes aren't necessarily made for competition anyway. They're made to do whatever earns the NBA more $$$.

Longer series = more playoff games = more $$$ for teams involved and the NBA for TV $$$.

It might be cool to have things seeded by the entire league, but one problem is teams play far more games against conference opponents so the records are skewed based on this anyway.

There have been about 5 good games out of 20, one of which was on NBATV so it's debatable how many viewers took that game in. The Western Conference playoffs this season pale in comparison of 2yrs ago.

Why?

I totally disagree.

Assuming the teams that we "expect" to win come out on top...

Now Orleans vs. San Antonio would be bad?
LA vs. Utah? (okay, maybe but that's just because I don't like Utah)
Boston vs Cleveland?
Detroit vs. Orlando?

Sounds like pretty good series to me.

I don't get why people are so upset, but maybe that's me. I think expectations are playing a role and the drastic opposite of what was expected is what we are seeing.

This happens and cannot be completely controlled for. The idea of seeding the entire league is not necessarily going to solve this problem either, in my view.

I don't think the playoff seedings or format have anything to do with the playoffs being boring so far. It's that the games just haven't been close. Lots of blowouts and games decided by early in the 4th quarter.

Out of the 30 playoff games so far, only 6 have been decided by 5 points or less. Conversely 16 games, more than 1/2 of all playoff games, have been decided by 10 or more points and amazingly 9 games, or almost 1/3 of all playoff games, of those games have been decided by more than 15 points.

That's why the playoffs have been bad. If most of the games were close, I don't think people would be caring about format.

The Spurs vs Suns series proves that you can't just assume having certain matchup would make for an exciting series. Aside from the first game, that has been an awful series to watch.

the thing for me is that even in some games that have been blowouts, they weren't blowouts for the entire game, and there has still been entertaining ball to watch in some of those games, in my view.

In other words, the Suns are down 3-1 to the Spurs but the Spurs didn't dominate in all 4 games. For the first game and a half the Suns looked very strong, for the most part. If you look at them down 3-0 going into game 4 it seemed "lopsided" but it wasn't.

Game 1 was great. Game 2 was competitive for the first half and then the Spurs broke the game open in the 3rd quarter and you never thought the Suns would come back. Games 3 and 4 were done in the first quarter.

That's just a huge letdown for what should have been a more entertaining series. It still could be though if the Suns can win game 5 or at the very least make it interesting.
