AUBURN HILLS - Scott Skiles' days as an unemployed coach will be ending soon. According to a source close to the former Chicago Bulls coach, Skiles already has been contacted by several teams and is eager to return to work.

It is unclear if the Knicks are one of the teams that has expressed interest in Skiles. Newly appointed Knicks president Donnie Walsh thinks highly of Skiles, who along with Rick Carlisle and Jeff Van Gundy are among a small group of experienced coaches available. But Skiles and former Knick Mark Jackson have emerged as the top candidates to replace Isiah Thomas once Walsh makes the much-anticipated change.

Walsh is expected to meet with Thomas before tonight's home game against Charlotte.

There is also talk about moving Jackson, who interviewed for the the Memphis Grizzlies' job last summer, into a front-office role, perhaps general manager. Skiles has also been mentioned as a possible successor to Pat Riley in Miami when Riley moves to the front office. If Walsh decides to look for a more proven candidate, he may turn to Skiles, who has coached Phoenix and Chicago

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

all good choices.

JVG would be great... just to piss off playa

Skiles is a good foundation guy. He will help build a culture of hardwork and defense. Mark Jackson strikes me as the best BB mind, but maybe not the right guy to start with.

Pull an Avery Johnson with Mark Jackson and have him start off as an assistant under either Skiles or JVG. Just keep Mark in the system and when he's ready to coach, make him the coach.

the question remains. will skiles even take the job with both curry and jamal on the roster? I like skiles and his no nonsense approach is what we need...

Ok now I totally agree with this. JVG with Mark Jackson as a top assistant.....hire Ewing to come in and keep Herb off social security a little longer.

Turn the Knicks around baby! Lets do it!

Skiles is a good coach buit he's a hard ass. The Knicks are in need of strict rules and focus but Skiles is like Bobby Knight......the ny media and just the current situation just doesn't need a war to go down btw the coach and players. Then again.......Donnie could just eat the players and spit them out on another team. That's not Donnies style though.

I hated JVG.....but if he has Mark Jackson around, maybe Ewing and another guy around him.....that's just a nice mix. Jeff was strict and stubborn and the knicks need that. JVG is also hilarious and also a stand up guy. He's a warroir coach that's stands up and takes blame for it all.

I say get the diet coke on ice for this cat.

Scott Skiles? Why? To come in here, demand big money and get it, so he can alienate everyone within a few days of arriving? WHY?

In our position, which is not an enviable one, it's time to understand that we might very well start rebuilding - aiming for 2010 as a cap year - and in that we're going to start moving vets out, playing youngsters and draft picks and nbdl signees, with the intent on developing young players and NOT trying to win games to make playoff runs.

In that guys like Skiles, Carlisle, JVG or any other high profile name - would all be HUGE wastes and HUGE busts. They can't make this roster win (nobody can) and they won't develop kids well. So it's a double loss right there!

We need to hire a young coach looking to get into the coaching scene. Mark Jackson, a guy like Darrell Armstrong, hell even Sam Cassell, maybe some assistant like Dave Hanners would be good. Guys like that... would be a good idea. You give them 2 year deals (coinciding with summer of 2010) and see what they have while watching the kids develop.
