I want to get started in serious photography. So I was wondering if anyone could recommend the best camera, computer, software etc? Right now I just own the regular point and shoot digital camera but I'm planning to upgrade to a SLR and eventually I plan on purchasing an iMac. Is this a good start for a total novice?

I recommend the nikon D40 or D50. Easy to use, state of the art 6 MP. cheap. great kit lens. for your first lens I'd recommend the nikkor 18-200 VR. If you get the D50 pick up a 50mm f1.8 too. Good luck!

Photoshop is the software that most all professional eventually use to manipulate pictures. I think there is a free version coming out soon. I know that some novice users use the Picassa application from Google which also doubles as an upload tool to their website photo hosting (I think).

For digital SLRs, I like Nikon or Canon and use Nikon myself.

Most users who are heavy into Photography and digital design use the Mac, but a computer should be bought to include the other things you do with it.

So far I've checked out 3 brands Sony, Nikon, and Canon. I want something sophisicated but not so sophisticated that a novice would have a difficult time figuring it out. Martin thanks for the tip on the Picassa application because sadly my laptop is lacking big time in terms of photo editing software. I had one more questions for you guys is there a gross difference between the different mp from 6 to 10?

6 MP should be more than enough.

Its free, powerful and supposed to replicate the Photoshop environment. Definitely more features than most standard apps.

Agreed. Also agree with nykshaknbake. Only thing, if you want really clear, great looking photos, 8.0 mp and higher is best. 10 is spetacular. Put it this way. The higher the resolution, the more you can use the photo. I've seen some unbelievable photos with very high resolution. Incredible!

ok 6MP vs 8MP vs 10MP. It depends on how big a pic you want to print. 8x11" or better? 6MP is good enough for 8x11". 10MP is too much. Like that.

If you want to an buy inexpensive camera to learn with, go with 6MP and buy a better version 2-3 years from now. Remember, every year or 2 they come down in price by a LOT and get better in terms of MP and functionality.

also, I say invest in a less expensive camera to learn on now and spend on a good lense (which will last you a lifetime).

Yeah, as a novice, 6MP is okay. But just a note on resolution, it also depends on what media you'll be using it for also. That's why I like the higher end use. A lot of good photographers will take two' camera's with them. One of high quality and one of lower quality, but still some quality. And they take them for the same reasons we both mentioned. Plus, if one breaks down, then you have that back up. Anyway, just other ideas. lol.

Regardless of the camera, the lenses are where you should spend the bulk of your photography money. Bodiy prices drop fast as aforementioned. Lenses are always the same. 10, 8 and 6 there really isn't too much of a difference as area is 2 dimensional and not linear.

If you wanted to start a stock photo business, then the higher mp is definately needed. Some of the biggest companies won't buy anything less then 10. Good points on the lenses.

Gimp is aight, but nothing fully replicates the functionality of a full version of Photoshop... u can probably download a pirated copy off Limewire or get it on Bit Torrent (not that i would advocate such illegal activities obviously)

Thanks for the tip on the mp; should I go with a wide-angle 20mm-35mm (because I am more interested in shooting landscapes shots) or should I just stick to a normal 50mm so I can get better acclimated to different shots?

Thanks for the help everyone sorry for the million questions

Go for the wide angle. remember that on digital SLRs there is 1.5-1.6 magnification so your 20 mm becomes more like 30mm. the nikon d40 comes with an 18-55 mm zoom lens. If you really need wind angle and can shell out the bucks there's an 11-22.

Okay so I finally bought my camera. I settled on the Nikon D40 it came with a lense and I also bought a case with a 2GB memory card. So right now I'm just playing around with it taking some test shots getting use to the camera etc.
