A couple of questions regarding McDyess:

1) I could be wrong, but I think McDyess's contract runs out at end of the season (2004). Let's say his salary this season is approx $12 million.

If we decide to let McDyess go at the end of the season, will we have a $12 million salary slot to fill, or would his salary slot just disappear from our team, thus lowering the amount we're over the cap?

I'm not too concerned about being over the cap (we're far over it anyway)--- I'm guessing that the only thing we'd get from giving up McDyess is $12 million of cap relief, which should make him decent trade bait (arguably a better value for other teams than Terrell Brandon, whose career has been over for a year or so already!). In McDyess's case, there still is the possibility of his return and the team owning his rights at the end of his contract would get first dibs on re-signing him at a likely reduced rate.

2) What happens at the end of McDyess's current deal? Would he be a restricted free agent (ie could we match other offers?!)?

Yeah, his salary will just disappear and lower the amount we're over the cap.

His 13.x million contracts ends this year, yes that amount will be taking off the salary cap. Since the knicks are quite alot over the salary cap this doesn't free up any money to sign a FA. We're approximately 80 mil tied up in salaries, you have to get below 42 mil to sign FA's with capmoney, if you're not under the cap more then 5 mil you probably won't use it since it either the Mid Level Exception or the caproom money. Miami for instance has only 29 million or so in salary upcoming season.

McDyess will be an unrestricted FA. We could offer him a big deal of money but if someone else signs him before we do we're out of luck (all assuming he's a 100% healthy of course).

Restricted FA's is more in terms of players coming of their rookie contracts, after they have been offered a qualifying offer which in fact is an extra one year extension to their rookie contract.

Just to avoid that talents would be "bought" away by more attractive teams in bigger markets.

So if McDyess actually does come back... we'd need to re-sign him before the season ends (and he'd have to sign w/o testing the FA market). Our only advantage would be that he'd know the people in organization, right?

I can't see him signing on for 10+mil ever again, maybe MLE if he makes a decent recovery.

No way I'd want to pay him 1 cent over the MLE IF he make a solid recovery and comes back this season. He's getting 13.5M this coming season and we don't know if he's even gonna be able to play.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

I say if he doesnt play let his contract expire and take the loot.

Here's an interesting question...
If a team is 5Mil under the cap.. can they combine that 5Mil and an exception for a player worth over 9Mil?

2nd question:
Can both exceptions be combined?

That is alot to come off the cap....but it isnt enough to really make a difference in signing a top tier free agent. Remember you still have to sign draft picks the next couple of years....and the Knicks will probably spend some money in free agency to replace departed players.

Yeah but signing draft picks don't take up nearly as much cap room as some of the joke contracts we have on the books now.

Here's the comparison:

Mike Sweetney
$1,840,800

Clarence Weatherspoon
$5,445,600

Who would you rather have on the Knicks: a no ups- having, no board snatching, overpaid journeyman or a rookie that can jump, rebound, post up, and score? After deducting that, then look at the salaries of each player for this coming year. It's a no-brainer, fellas.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!
