NY Receives:
C Erick Dampier
SF Mike Dunleavy
GS Receives:
PF Kurt Thomas
PG Charlie Ward
Why the knicks do this, if Frank Williams proves he is able to run the point having three point guards isn't neccessary, therefore moving Ward will free up more minutes for Frank to learn the NBA game. Losing Kurt hurts but getting back Dampier a legit center in the East will pay off huge dividends, plus by losing kurt this will force Sweetney to pick up his game and stay sharp, instead of riding the pine. Mike Dunleavy makes this trade works cap-wise but he can develop into a solid SF when Sprewell's days in NY are over.
Why GS does this, with the drafting of Mikael Pietrus GS has produced a logjam at the three position, last year GS didn't have enough minutes to let Dunleavy play, so letting him move on and getting Kurt Thomas in return GS can start Kurt at the four and Antwan Jamison at the three. GS can do two things with ward, they can let him play to absorb the loss of Gilbert Arenas, or they can cut him and use the extra money to resign him to a more lucrative offer.
While this trade doesn't solve all of our problems it helps use find minutes for players who are gonna be our core for the future, one more idea I have is to find a way to get rid of extra contracts, and I'm talking about if we can't get any deals done to possibly cut/release players, if this deal gets done and we can't find any takers for shandan, see ya on the free agent market, the same goes for travis knight. I'd like for us to keep Lampe with the team and let Slavko play in Europe for one more year or two. With the new roster space players on our summer league team such as Matt Caroll from Notre Dame, Kareem Shabazz from Providence, and Uggonna Onyekwe from Penn should be added to the roster for minimun contracts.
New Line-Up
C Erick Dampier
PF Mike Sweetney
SF Latrell Sprewell
SG Allan Houston
PG Frank Williams (please god let him be the answer)
Bench
C Michael Doleac
PF Maciej Lampe
SF Mike Dunleavy
SG Matt Carrol
PG Howard Eisley
PF Othella Harrington
PF Clarence Weatherspoon
IR Antonio Mcdyess
IR Kareem Shabazz
IR Uggonna Onyekwe
While I know this isn't a dominate lineup it screams the word potential.

There is no way in HELL that they are going to give up Dunleavy. If they do, they are a worst managed team than we are. Dampier is a decent center in the West, in the East he would do very well. But, the question is: Why would G.S. want to do a trade like this? There has to be an upside for them. Pietrius is ok, but Dunleavy is MUCH better. Dunleavy can play the 2,3, or in a bind maybe the 4. His versatility makes him a huge asset for a rebuiling team like G.S.
If you throw in a draft pick or the rights to Milos, maybe. But there has to be something that they can say as the necessity for making a trade like this. They don't need to get rid of Dunleavy just yet. Pietrius can flop. What would they do then? Jamison could get hurt. What would they do then?
I wish it would happen, but this isn't going to happen. They hold all the cards and they aren't ready to fold their hand on this one.
