That's a higher winning % than any western conference team has against the west or has against the east for that matter. They're still my pick to make the finals and I think I have to change my previous pick of the Lakers to win it.

boston is on a mission. they will have 4 90% ft shooters at the end of games and clutch shotmakers in cassell, pierce, and allen.

only question mark is age/health. but i think this is their year. the cassell move puts them over the top.

Ainge and Isiah have been on the job for the same amount of years.

Celtics have 2 Atlantic division titles and are primed for at least a trip to the ECF's this year.

Isiah 1 play-off appeaance.

Ainge did it by gutting the roster acquiring youth and picks - something he took alot of heat for in the beginning - and was able to turn those assets into two all-NBA veterans to trio with the lone remaining star from the roster he inherited

the other guy stinks.

one of the foot notes to any Celtics championship this year will likely be that they won't be tested or worn down in the eastern conf play offs.

Whoever comes out of the west might have to play 3 series that go 7 games, or have the potential to.

The celtics are going to sweep the first round because of the talent differential. Sixers, Atlanta & Nets wouldn't even sniff the play offs out west - they'd probably have a record much closer to Seattle's!

They're probably only going to be really tested in the conference finals.

Still, I'm not saying they're not the best team- they probably are- especially with Mr Clutch, Sam Cassell. But their likely finals opponent might be weakened from having to play much better competition to get there.

again something needs to be done about the disparity in talent on the floor and on the sidelines between the two conferences. league play would be much better with shrinkage.

seems the simplest answer is to get rid of a team in each conference and go back to the 4 divisions. have a supplemental draft based on team overall record since the league expanded to 30

Ainge made some bad moves, but when you are going in the right direction, you have enough flexibility to redeem yourself, which is exactly what he did.
"This is a very cautious situation that we're in. You have to be conservative in terms of using your assets and using them wisely. We're building for the future." - Zeke (I guess not protecting a first round pick is being conservative)

this move made the kg acquisition all possible:
Traded guard Dan Dickau, center Raef LaFrentz and the draft rights to guard Randy Foye to the Portland Trail Blazers for guard Sebastian Telfair, center Theo Ratliff and a 2008 second-round pick

traded away a 2006 lotto pick to acquire theo's expiring...that's planning...

Ainge has also been an opportunist and when an idiot is drafting ahead of you all opportunities are possible...
with the 20th pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, the NY Knicks select...........RENALDO BALKMAN!!!!

next thing you know Stern is announcing a trade:

Phoenix acquires a future first-round pick from Boston for Brian Grant, the Draft rights to Rajon Rondo and cash considerations

Celtics have enormous frontline

KG--7-1
Perkins 6-10 280 with long arms

and a great on ball defender in Rondo
and while Allen and Pierce are only average--they are long big players themselves + they have very good bench cohesion. When you can protect the basket like the Celtics have with their enormous length---have the ability to pressure the ball on every possession with lengthy long armed wings--it's hard to score on them--they have done it all year with D + they have the ability to put up numbers. They pretty much have the recipe down--it does not guarantee that they will win but realistically I think that they have the best chanc e of the 5 teams that I think can win it all

Spurs Detroit Phoenix Boston Lakers darkhorse is NOrleans Dallas is done Utah isnt winning it and one in east has a chance except two teams IMHO.

they've been playing play off style defense all year. Effort.

The question is- do they drop a level in the play offs when suddenly everyone is playing with that same intensity or do they get tired?

Riley's Knicks would do the same thing- play at such a high level during the year, that in the play offs, they couldn't raise it a notch.

And Dallas last year blasted their way through the regular season, and then folded.

But yea- they have athletes & they have effort- 2 key ingredients.

The playoffs are a whole different animal.

That's a possible hypothesis but the guys out there now on the elite teams sure look like they're playing their hardest.
