What i mean by a MOTOR is a player who has a drive to succeed that comes from within himself. Someone who does not NEED coaching to get motivated, someone who inspires others by example. Work Ethic and desire.

Tim Duncan, Jordan, Kidd, Malone, Ewing, CP3, Kobe, Garnett

these players all have MOTORS. they set the tone by example. Shit even Isiah had a hell of a Motor as a player...

I think the ONLY player we have with a good motor is David Lee, thats why we love him. He may not have much talent.. But his motor is good so he gets the most out of his parts.

So looking at the draft i think this is something we need to look at very hard, cause if you take a very talented player who has "character issues" and throw them into this mix of players I dont see it doing much good. We need someone who will not only be the best player on the team but the hardest worker. Someone DLEE can latch onto and let the other players get in line or fall out of it.

I'd apply this to coaches, free agent signings and trades. Anyone we bring in here has to have this quality.

Yes, absolutely. Players in this draft with motors include: Beasley, Hansborough, Gallinari, Augustin, Collison, Westbrook, Lopez, Love. Players without a decent motor include: Mayo, Gordon, Thabeet

Best motor that jumps out at me right away is the american psycho Tyler hansborough as far as college.

Players need to walk the fine line of playing hard and being borderline psychotic. Kevin Garnett is a crazy guy when he plays. Lots of chest bumping, cursing, salivating, screaming crazy things, facial expression.......not one player on the Knicks "get up" like that....of course david lee. David Lee is at his best when he looks like he's exausted. He's a crazy guy. He has that blank look in his eyes, you see him talking fast, his mouth won't close, his shoulders are tight and unrelaxed, etc.....

It kinda makes you wanna hire a professional to analyze the behavior of players.

I think Nate and Balkman also play with a high motor, but we need 7-8 guys with high motors, not just 2-3 guys.

Theres players with tremendous skill and motors, and theres players with motors. David Lee and Balkman have motors.

MJ, Kobe, KG, Bird, etc. have/had tremendous skill and never ending motors.

Balkman and Nate have heart... I think its a little different tho let me explain.

I don't see Nate or Balkman being first in line for a drill.

Nate is usually goofing off during warm ups and I have heard stories of balkmans horrible work ethic which is a main reason he does not get playing time.

While Nate and Balk give it their all during the game... I don't see them setting good examples work ethic wise during practice or the off season.

Lee I can see doing that.

I have heard some nice things about nae working hard in summer so I won't say its impossible for him, maybe in the right environment he could flurrish and his work ethic could shine but amongst the rest of these clowns your only gunna see him goofing off in warmups.. It just doesent look good. We need players who take this seriously right now.

before passing judgment on any of our players- I want to see how they perform with a new coach, GM & atmosphere. I wouldn't blame Balkman for not giving it his all in practice, since somehow Q Brick with his bad back and poor shooting performance still got the majority of the time ahead of Balkman and Jeffries.

The fact is, when Balkman is out there, he makes things happen- good things, things that help teams win games.

now this guy has a proper motor

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/25/sports/ncaabasketball/25wvu.html?_r=1&ref=ncaabasketball&oref=slogin

strictly speaking Nate does have the proper motor but you mean in combination with work ethic and an extreme competitiveness, correct?

Motor is good but the computer should also be at least OK.
Otherwise this machine is on crush course.

"I don't look for pretty players," Walsh said of the (Reggie Miller) pick in a The New York Times article. "I look for players with heart and competitive spirit."

knicks should get a late lotto pick and take hansborough. i think his low end ceiling is jeff foster.

might not be a popular decision, but the only way to get that pick is by moving david lee.

david lee + eddy curry + nate robinson + 2009 #1 for artest + brad miller + sacramento's 2008 #1 (and take hansborough)

dj - what if Hansbrough does not be come out this year?

Last I heard, he is staying. Depending upon how deep Carolina advances in the tournament, he could base the decision on unfinished business if the heels get bumped this weekend.

Gilbert Arenas has an incredible motor. He's the kind of guy who can't sit still.

I have a feeling Hanbrough wont come out this year. He will end up the all time leading scorer in UNC history

I don't think this trade can be done before the draft because Artest will opt out of his current before the draft takes place. He then can't be signed until after July 1. It would almost have to be a discussed on draft night and then consummated afterwards in about 60days or thereabouts.

well..............yeah..............of course!

I don't think I'd add kidd, Malone, Ewing or CP3 (whoever that' is) because these guys where great, but did not inspire others to play better. I especially don't look at Ewing's teammates as being other than a group of foul mouthed thugs in Starks & Mason. Granted, the Knick should of, would've won at least one' championship with that team, if it had not been for the bulls. And couldn't even get passed Houston to do it either. Inspiration would have gotten them far and that wasn't Ewings fault.

You are as good a teacher, inspiration wise, 'as your students are, as good as observers and listeners'. One bad apple can wreck the whole basket. But would that make you a bad teacher? Not neccessarily.
I'll never trust this' team again.

You forgot Derrick as a motor, but mainly, I agree with the above.
