(And while we're here, I wasn't sold on Yao for the same reason I'm not sold on any guy taller than 7-foot-2 -- other than Kareem, there's no track record of super-tall guys being able to stay healthy and effective while playing between 82-100 games per season at the NBA level. Bill Walton, Rik Smits, Shawn Bradley, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Tom Burleson, Gheorghe Muresan ... all of those guys had major problems staying on the court, right? It's not a game designed for freakishly tall guys who weigh 300-plus pounds. That's what worried me about Yao, along with the whole "everyone will be going out of their way to dunk on him" thing and all the requisite cultural adjustments. If Williams hadn't bought that freaking motorcycle, I would have been right on this one. So there.)

Great point that's crossed my mind before. They just play too many damn games really!
Now look at Bynum, I wonder about his future after a foot or knee injury (though he isn't freakishly athletic).
Perhaps Phoenix has the right idea with Shaq. Use the big man selectively and then fully in the post season.

was Bill Walton taller than 7'2"? He just had freakishly bad feet.

Rik Smits was effective- I thought he had plenty of stretches where he played lots of games.

I'm not going to google this- but I seem to recall Mark Eaton played a lot of games out in Utah.

It's just something to take into account with all this talk of Thabeet the 3rd pick.

How long has Dikembe played? Guy has barely missed any games during his whole career. Thats a big point with Thabeet--he seems to have unusually good stamina for a guy his size. Usually those guys are huffing and puffing---Hasheem barely breaks into a sweat. He doesnt have a thyroid problem--he's very muscular--built just like Dikembe. He doesnt have unusually large feet or hands for his size. Who knows with any player but Hasheem is put together and well proportioned for a big. The only thing he does funny is run with a little bit io a waddle but he can run very fast for his size--way faster than Yao up court.

You have to look at body mass in proportion with height. A guy weighing 300+ no matter how tall will have serious problems in his later years when your job is to run and jump. This is the same problems that high flyers have. A guard or forward that is hop challenged will have a longer career than a guy dunking every time down.

With that said, Thabeet is 7'3" and 265 lbs almost the same dimensions as Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean Jacque Wamutombo who is 7'2" and 260lbs. If he keeps his weight down he should not have any problems with his feet for his career.

Dikembe was an able scorer coming outta college. He averaged 16pts in his first season if I'm not mistaken. Thabeet is not that type of player. He's a very good shotblocker though. I'm afraid of him though, definately not sold.

We have so many glaring weaknesses that we have to take the best player available.

But- I don't think I would worry about Thabeet's longevity. I'd be more concerned with adding a unidimensional player - I mean, if Thabeet is the next Dikembe, you do it.

But if he is the next Sam Dalembert- can we splice his DNA to Curry? How do you split time between an ok defensive center and an ok offensive center?

Yes, we need shot blocking, but we need everything.
