The Knicks should do the smart' thing. Buy out HALF' of his contract and TRADE' him to the Pistons for a couple of future draft picks, including a couple of players with ending contracts, within the next one or two years.

This is why I say buy out half' of the contract to make it more attractive offer.

You can't buyout a player and then trade him. The Knicks also couldn't re-sign him for half his current contract. That would be about $10 mil a season and the Knicks can't offer anyone more than the MLE. They wouldn't have Marbury's Bird rights. He'd no longer be a Knick if he were bought out.

I didn't say sign him to half a contract. I said buy out half the contract, to make a deal more attractive to another team. We got a taker in Detroit, why not?

And why can't you buy out half the contract, if another team is gonna pay the other half in his last year?

Okay, obviously some team is GOING to pick him up. He's about half the player he once was, but he still can be a useful player for the right squad. But no one is going to trade for him when the Knicks have no leverage. The Knicks have created a big enough rift for where they can't take him back, so teams will wait for him to get bought out (which was the case at the deadline this year with several players).

It just doesn't work that way. If we buyout his contract, he's a free agent regardless of how much we buy him out for. When you buyout a player, you have no rights to him (including no right to trade him).

Joe Dumars is somewhere laughing his ass off at this one. So are Afflalo and Stuckey. Flip loves Steph from a distance.

I'll try this one more time. What I'm saying is 'offer to buy out half of his last year. That way We end up losing only 10 mil and Detroit (or whoever) pays only 10 mil. With that scenario, it makes it a lot more attractive for someone to pick him up. In exchange, we get a couple of draft picks. We get rid of starbury for next year, and we have a couple of drafts coming our way.

Detroit wouldn't need them, because they are one of the elite teams. Meanwhile, we can use the drafts to make quality picks, if they exist, or use them for trade bait. The only reason I'd want to make this trade now' is because someone's actually interested in him. This may be our only chance to get rid of him. The other beauty is, if Detroit starts to have a bad season (and remember, starbury would be on their team now), then our stock goes up in the future drafts'.

What do ya think? I'm sure there's been joint payments on someone contracts before. I just can't think of any right now.

I'll try this one more time too. We buyout half of Marbury's last year, and he's no longer our property to trade. He collects $10 mil (half his salary) and signs as an FA with whatever team wants him for whatever price he and they agree to. The joint payments idea is allowed in baseball but not basketball. There is no way in which we can lower Marbury's salary and then trade him. We either trade him at his full contract value or buy him out and lose all rights to trade him.

But he's not a free agent next year. Anyway, you make a point about it working in baseball and not basketball. Okay, maybe that's where I seen it done before. But okay then again, if we have to buy the whole thing out, then do it. Let's get three' future draft choices and a player they can unload for that price. Or at least two drafts and two players. 21 million is a lot to give up.

What would you want for 21 million? Again, I say if Detroit starts to show fading by next year, then we could end up with some pretty good positions come draft time the next two years. That would kind of make up for what chicaog did to us when we made a simular deal.

Now if we can only get rid of isiad-iot and bring someone in who knows how to draft.
I'll never trust this' team again.
