The top 8 teams in each conference or the top 16 teams in the league regardless of which conference their in? I'd say the latter. We wouldn't see some crappy (less entertaining) .400 teams in the east in the playoffs and we'd see some exciting .550ish teams in the west instead.

While it makes for some better competition (personally, I think that sub-500 teams should be barred from the postseason altogether), there are two issueswith that.

1) Travel is going to be too brutal for these teams going from coast-to-coast - especially for a 7-game series. The West teams would have a huge advantage since they won't have to travel as much as Boston or Detroit would.

2) I don't know this for sure, but I think you risk losing huge ratings on the East Coast if there's just 4 teams in the East there.

I had a playoff idea myself that I posted last year but I'll bring it up again.

Take the 3 division winners (just like in college, you should be rewarded for winning your division with a playoff spot) and the 5 best after that and seed the 8 by record. That way if some team won their division with like a 42-40 record (i/e the Raptors last year), they get in but they'll only be the 7th or 8th seed instead of the 4th.

Here is the thing- when you've got a 49 win team out west in the lottery with a real chance to land a top pick- how does that help strengthen the east?

Take the top 16 teams.

As far as ratings- they're down across the board- so that tells me they've lost the casual fan and only have hard core fans- and I would rather watch better basketball in the play offs that watch Cleveland in the finals get mowed down by San Antonio in 4 games.

If its Lakers San Antonio in the finals, that is going to be fantastic basketball.

Like I said, doing the top 16 teams would give us much more competitive basketball. Not disputing that in the least. Let's say the season ended today:
1- Boston 46 12 .793
2- Detroit 44 16 .733
3- San Antonio 42 17 .712
4- LA Lakers 43 18 .705
5- New Orleans 40 19 .678
6- Phoenix 40 20 .667
7- Houston 39 20 .661
8- Utah 39 22 .639
9- Dallas 39 22 .639
10- Orlando 39 23 .629
11- Go1den State 37 22
12- Denver 35 24 .593
13- Cleveland 34 26
14- Toronto 32 27
15- Portland 31 30
16- Washington 29 30

The playoff bracket would look like this:

(16) Washington @ (1) Boston
(9) Dallas @ (8) Utah

(13) Cleveland @ (4) LA Lakers (Kobe vs. LeBron)
(12) Denver @ (5) New Orleans

(14) Toronto @ (3) San Antonio
(11) Golden State @ (6) Phoenix

(15) Portland @ (2) Detroit
(10) Orlando @ (7) Houston

Not bad. See at least 2 potential upset in this bracket too.

The Lakers and Spurs would only meet in the NBA Finals going by this - so yeah, it would be sweet as hell.

It's all about making extra money. I'll call it 'excitement money'. It also brings a certain kind of bragging right, to say your team made the playoffs.
I'll never trust this' team again.

this affects 2 teams from each conference- if you go with the top right now

Out are Philly & NJ- in are Denver & Portland

And here is why you do this- right now, Denver with a near 600 record (.593) is out of the play offs.

Denver @ 593 has a chance of landing the top pick.

If that happens- as slim as it is- then that will probably do more to drive Stern to 'fix' things than the fact they're not in the play offs.

Follow the brackets.

The Lakers (who would be the 4th seed) are on one side and the Spurs (3rd) are on the other side. They'd only meet in the Finals.

I think those brackets would be really exciting. I think part of the reason the NBA doesn't do this is that it would be acknowledging the big discrepancy between the east and the west, whereas they want to portray the east as "on the rise" and not in need of some handicap like this. But the playoffs would be more exciting this year!

Seeing that the East has won three out of the last four all star games, it wouid be a little hard to argue.
I'll never trust this' team again.

But on the other hand, the West has won seven of the last nine championships.
I'll never trust this' team again.
