Scott Layden needs to trade McDyess. It is the same situation as Terrell Brandon but McDyess has more of an opportunity to play. A team trying to get under the cap could take his 13.5 for one year and then dumb him to go after Kobe and KG. Or we keep him and trade Sprewell next year in the final year of his contract. That would give the knicks more money to work with.

And as for a point guard. We don't need one. We need front court help. If speedy Claxton can outplay Jason Kidd why even worry about that position. I'm sure Ward, or Eisley could do the same thing with two twin towers on the team. The big men take all the pressure off of everyone else. Name the last good point guard besides Magic Johnson(Which is an exception) that took his time to the finals. Its all about the big men. Who was the point when the Knicks went to the finals? And who was the point on San Antonio the year they played each other. Who cares!! Because its all about the big men. Just pick up Kenny Anderson and call it a day.

Kenny Anderson?! He sucks. Has for awhile now. I'd rather keep Ward than sign him.

Aren't the Knicks one of the teams that should be trying to get under the cap. The Knicks should hold on to Dice and let him walk instead of taking on more contracts that will kill the cap. Personally they should hold on to all the players except Spoon, Eisley and Anderson as their contracts extend all the way to 2006 and 2007. Let Spree's expire, KT'S, Ward, Knight, Dice and Othella these contracts should all be allowed to expire on their own. If the KNicks could unload Spoon, Eisley and Anderson for players who has a large contract but shorter time they should do it, faster you get the books in your favor the better chance of getting quality free agents to help the KNicks. The old core and the new core is pretty much set. The Knicks should just wait it out no need to go after free agents that go straight to the cap. As you know that 4.9 mil exception is close to 9.8 mil in the NYK books. I can't see them using the exception especially when the talent pool ends right after Kidd and O'neal and the others are restricted or out of the NYK range. I say the KNicks just stay put and let the rookies get time to develope.

No...the Knicks should NOT try to get under the salary cap...its not a realistic goal. What they should do is stockpile young talent around their overpaid stars. Houston and Spree's contracts are excessive to say the least but they are very good players. Thomas has a good contract. Its Anderson, Eisley, Ward, Knight, Spoon and Harrington's contracts that are not only strapping the payrole but using valueable roster spots that should be used for young players. The Knicks will never be under the cap, but that doesnt mean they cant build something great even if they do overpay their main players. Just dont overpay the role players. Fill those spots with good young bench players through the draft and the MLE. Then they might actually have the pieces to complete a sign and trade for Kidd, Oneil, or Brand. Nobody wants our garbage but that can change, and hopefully it is.

good post. the knicks will never be under the cap. in a few years, unless the salary cap is made significantly greater, i think all teams (except the clippers of course) will have to get players via sign and trade or MLE. currently, i think only 5 teams are under the cap.

this is a great post you guys. i agree with everyone. its time for scott layden & co to realize that its time to rebuild. they need to stop making these short sided trades and just let the contracts run out.

I agree. There's nothing realistic that can be done trade wise this year that would benefit the Knicks in the long run. I dont just want to make the playoffs, I want tobe able to make and be competitve in the Finals. Let these contract run out, develop som young talent and if you trade, trade for picks or some inexpensive young talent.
I would love to be the cheese in a Beyonce/Ashanti sandwich.

While I agree that NY should rebuild, (particularly getting rid of the albatross that is Allan Housless' undeserved contract) I can't agree with the 'we'll never be under the cap' comments. Look no further than this year's champions for the blueprint on how it's done. Getting under the cap does not mean getting there and staying there. It means planning for that one season where your team can be 14, 15 million under, even if you're over the cap the seasons before (as SA was) and will be over the cap for quite a few seasons after. If a GM with a clue (read: NOT Scott LayDUMB) can come up with a long term plan to get this team under the cap for the end of 2007-2008 season, get a QUALITY free agent (at or entering his prime) that will justify putting NY back over the cap, then he's done a hell of a job.

Now, if these draft picks turn out as well as everybody expects, that's one hella step towards that. Dumping the Housless', Eisley, Anderson contracts would be another. Even Spree, if NY commits to this path. Assuming the picks play well, NY would be in exactly the same spot (mediocrity), but moving in a direction that would enable the team to add a top-notch free agent to the mix at approximately the time these kids would be 'coming into their own' as far as their NBA games go.
