Stephen A. Smith

Stephen A. Smith, ESPN commentator and midday guy on WEPN (1050 AM, ESPN Radio), will host a public round-table discussion on "The Black Athlete" Wednesday, 2-4 p.m., at ESPN Zone restaurant in Times Square.

Participants in the forum will include author Shaun Powell, WBLS morning host and comic Steve Harvey, former NFL star Deion Sanders and NBA Commissioner David Stern.

The event is also a benefit for Harlem RBI, a nonprofit founded in 1991 that offers sports and educational activities to more than 650 boys and girls each year.

The public is invited to watch the discussion and make a donation to Harlem RBI, which will also benefit from auctions of sports memorabilia and the sale of tickets donated by the Knicks for their game tomorrow night against the Charlotte Bobcats. All those seats will be $10.50.

Smith says the discussion itself is timely, not just for Black History Month, but because of the multitude of issues that surround and affect black athletes.

"You've got the Michael Vick case, steroids and Barry Bonds, the dress code in the NBA and all these other things," says Smith. "I want to look at how it affects our whole country at a time when Barack Obama is making a serious run for President.

"We'll measure how far we've come and how far we still need to go."

Smith also thinks it's valuable for people to know "that the black community isn't monolithic on sports subjects, any more than it's monolithic on any subject.

"We're as diverse as every other community. You have people like Michael Jordan or Charles Barkley who do good things under the public radar, then others who say if you're doing them under the radar, that's a problem."

And for the record, Smith himself thinks there's reason for optimism. "Absolutely," he says. "There's a lot to be happy about these days."

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.
