NY Post July 2, 2003 -- Knicks assistant coach Herb Williams thinks Mike Sweetney can start next season, 7-foot Maciej Lampe can make the rotation and 7-6 Slavko Vranes can be a defensive menace in a few years if he gets stronger.
Williams' analyses are critical, as he's the only Knick representative who has faced the rookie trio. Williams got a league-wide rep during pre-draft workouts of not being afraid to bang with the prospects to see what they had.

"His experience as a low-post player, along with him being in great physical shape, was invaluable during the workouts," GM Scott Layden said. "He will be crucial as we develop our young players."
There's no question Sweetney can score inside and battle Clarence Weatherspoon and Othella Harrington for starting power forward.

"He's really good with his back to the basket," Williams said. "He gets a deep low position. A lot of kids you have to teach them that. He already knows how to do it. He'll draw double teams and he's good at passing out of it.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

And we are just supposed to take Herb "Career 12th man" Williams opinion seriously? We are talking Herb Williams here, who in my opinion would be lucky if he could take an injured Felton Spencer one-on-one, let alone a healthy one. Posh!

masterjedidarkcaster, can we take you seriously after that statement....

Herb Williams....18 NBA seasons with five teams (Pacers first, Knicks last), a near two-decade span that included more than 1,100 career games, over 6,000 rebounds and nearly 12,000 points.

Career 12th man....silly.

I don't know how old you are, but obviously you can't be over 25, and if you are you have never seen Herb Williams play. Herb is well respected, his days as a 12th man came when he was say past his prime, but when he was in his prime, during his days with the Pacers I think, Williams was a very good big man, a shot blocker, and good defender look at his stats in 84 and 85, the guy was averaging 19ppg/9 boards and over 2 blocks!! I would take herb in his 20's over spoon, Kt, Othella, knight and Doleac in a NY minute....

lol,go herb!i dont know but im thinking the way things look in the east that there are no serious centers out there.can Vranes be a quick impact in the east.really this guy in a huge presence in the middle and alot of players would deside to shoot more jumpers which means more of a chance for him and Sweetney to collect rebs.i think we could get some win with him playing this season, than wait for a yr. or two.

I am not over 25 (23 in Sept.), and I never got to see Herb in his prime. But, hey, he didn't leave a good impression on me when he was here. I know, he was winding down, but I just went on my own observations. Too bad, I would have like to see him in his prime. If he was as good as you say he was, the tape wouldn't do him justice.

I remember Herb williams on the mavs. He was like poor mans Robert Parish. derek harper and him were the guys running it down there in dallas before the mavs long dry spell of losing. when the knicks got him I would love when he came in a game and the fans would be yelling his name. That just showed that the ny fans respected players that play with heart. Herb wasn't a great player for NY it was just that he gave us everything he had. That is why he is respected in NY.

Eddie Lee Wilkins(ashy legs and all) gave his all to the Knicks and I didn't hear the fans screaming his name.
