It's looking more and more like Jason Kidd's start for the road team in Sunday's NBA All-Star Game will indeed be his farewell to the Eastern Conference.

That's because the New Jersey Nets and Dallas Mavericks are again closing in on a deal that would send Kidd back to his original team, according to NBA front-office sources.

A reconfigured trade likely won't be submitted for league approval until Monday -- and is bound to draw a longer-than-usual examination from the league before it's approved after the many complications that derailed the teams' original agreement on Wednesday -- but sources say that the Mavericks and Nets have reached a tentative agreement on the two major changes to save the blockbuster swap.

Sources say Mavs swingman Trenton Hassell and the retired Keith Van Horn will be plugged into the trade in place of Jerry Stackhouse and Devean George. If the newly proposed deal goes through, New Jersey would receive 24-year-old point guard Devin Harris, center DeSagana Diop, guard Maurice Ager, forwards Hassell and Van Horn, two first-round draft picks and $3 million in cash for Kidd and Nets forward Malik Allen.

To make up for the removal of George -- who blocked his inclusion by citing a little-known league rule that prevents certain players with one-year contracts from being traded without their consent -- Dallas has secured Van Horn's participation via sign-and-trade in George's place. Out of the game since the 2006 NBA Finals, Van Horn will be required to report to New Jersey and submit to a physical to complete the transaction, with sources adding that the amount Van Horn receives this season -- believed to be more than $4 million -- will not be pro-rated even though Van Horn would be joining the Nets with less than half the season remaining.

2 draft picks too for NJ? Dallas is going for the championship this year! This trade will really help NJ rebuild. Now they just need to dump Vince for whatever youth they can get.

great trade for NJ. if they can pull a VC for JOneal they'll be fine.

god, i hate the knicks.

i still say dallas is overpaying. this trade still doesn't put them in the top three in the West. maybe it gets them by a New Orleans or something, but that's it.

iverson, kg, kidd, shaq, etc...all these big time players being traded and after some accusing him of doing a "solid" for his former teammate, it looks like mchale probably got the best young player to start building a team of the lot.

How did Dallas overpay? The only significant player they are giving up is Harris. The 2 draft picks will be towards the back end of the first round. And who knows if they have any protection.

I think this is a good move for Dallas. It puts them back into the discussion out west. Without this trade, there was no way they were comming out of the west.

all the trades were vastly different though - it's probably fair to say philly did the worst, but miami got marion or sizable cap room if marion doesn't work out, nj got a young pg and cap room... also KG was by fair the best of that lot at the time of his trade. i dunno, all those trades are better than anything the knicks have done either way.

i don't think it realistically puts them in the discussion, but that's a difference of opinion, i guess. kidd probably has something left in the tank for a major run, we'll see, i guess.

Considering their age differences, Harris alone for Kidd would have been a fair deal. Dallas overpaid but at least they have a legit shot now at the title.

I never understood the extreme bashing against McHale. Yeah he made a few mistakes every GM has if you compare a similar tenure as Mchale but the Wolves were a pereenial playoff team under most of his watch and advance to the WCF. They have a future stud, a couple excellent draft picks in the fold, a and cap space in the very near future.

As far as the Kidd trade looks like Kiki and Thorn know what time it is.

Meanwhile the Knicks.......

Maybe NJ can re-route him to NY for Uncle Fred, then we sign H2O for the rest of the season. The return of the SUNSHINE BOYS !!!

C = CURRY
PF = ZACH
SF = KVH
SG = H2O
PG = CRAW

Now we can spread the floor and do some damage !! The SUNSHINE BOYS can compensate for the blackhole and the hamburgler.
When opportunity knocks, make sure you open the door !!!

I think Malik Allen and Antoine Wright (especially A. Wright) were key to the deal. Both of these guys are useful contributors of the bench and have deepned Dallas's bench -in addition to getting J. Kidd.
Dallas got rid of non-contributor Trenton Hassel and Harris effectively - and gave the Nets two bottom 5-8 draft picks. So I am not sure - one can say the Nets made out like bandits or anything.
Although if Devin plays really well in Nj - then thats all you can really ask for.

Isn't that the whole point.

The point is to get the best deal you can. I don't think they needed to give up Harris and two 1st rd picks. I think NJ would have caved in and done a deal for less than that. Maybe I'm wrong. It's just my suspicion. They weren't gonna get something better than Harris alone for Kidd.

I think Bonnie should be a GM. He is shrewder than Cuban and Donnie Walsh at this whole trading thing.

KVH took a lot of crap for being very white, but damm this guy got some major bank over the years.

4mil not prorated is just killer for a week of working out then going home with "tendonitous" is good work if you can get it.

I thought knick fans were a bit harsh on this guy for being soft.

The guy could rebound. Isiah is a dumbass but he did call those who said he was soft. i think he avg like 8 rebs a game!!!!
