Civil service jobs are seen as easy, but with all the factors that come with the job, it can be very depressing work.
Example. I know a few guys that work for the post office. A lot of guys tend to lose their minds due to the seemingly endless flow of mail that comes in around the clock. The repeditiveness. The unwarrented passenger complaints. The working conditions outside and inside. Having to deal with the weather no matter how bad it is, knowing you just can't call out sick. The health problems associated with anxiety and depression. Having to do your job with no room for mistakes. The knowledge that you can get ivestigated and go to jail over the basic operations of the job. Bad neighborhoods, racist neightborhoods, snobbish neightborhoods, etc......
I'm just trying to paint a picture of what a postal worker has to deal with. When receiving mail, you take forgranted that its just supposed to get to its destination and that's that. There are hard working people involved in the process. A lot of guys never had any other work experience before taking the job. Others have college degrees and grew tired of corperate life. Some people were laid off from other jobs, some people actually grew up wanting to be mailmen.
Anyway, if your mail wasn't coming, you gotta report it. The guy that has been delivering could be a lazy bastard. He could also be stressed out. As I said the work is over looked when things run smoothly......they rarely get any recognition for that.....but if they do make a small infraction they can lose their jobs or go to jail.
Again I'm just trying to paint a picture from the world of a Post office worker.
As you know I work a civil service job as well with the MTA. I for one have never been this sick, or mentally strained in my entire life. I only have been working with them for almost 5 years. I call out sick all the time just off of mood. If I'm having a bad day in my personal life, I don't need some ******* coming up to me thinking is within their rights to talk to me like a second class citizen. A "customer" can lie about anything and I could be suspended or fired at anytime. That's a lot of stress. As far as my experiences with the trains, the system works fine 80% of the time. When it does nobody says anything. When it goes wrong, people wanna yell and call you ******* and *****. They wanna call you lazy. They lie with complaint letters. They assault, like throwing things, spit and actually physical contact. Its crazy and I personally do feel under appreciated. That's depressing.
Then quit! Yeah ok. It is that easy, but if you are locked into the job and 24hr lifestyle its a lot harder to just quit. The pay is good and the benifits are decent. Its tough to simply quit after giving 5-10-15 years to something unrelated to whatever prior skills or work experience you may have. Most likely you would have to take a pay cut. If you have a family you simply can't give up on them.
Anyway, civil service is very depressing work. I say make complaints if things are going wrong but relax a little with the personal attacks especially with how easy the job is. Cuz overrall, no it is not easy to deal with the whole experience.
Along with complaints, it would be nice to acknowledge the good work by people that goes unnoticed when things go smoothly.
