Sports Illustrated -
Memphis GM Chris Wallace challenged all executives who are speaking out against the Pau Gasol trade to do so on record, and according to Sports Illustrated, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich did just that on Friday night.

"What they did in Memphis is beyond comprehension," said Popovich. "There should be a trade committee that can scratch all trades that make no sense. I just wish I had been on a trade committe that oversees NBA trades. I'd like to elect myself to that committee. I would have voted no to the L.A. trade."

When told that Wallace had challenged executives to criticize the deal publicly, Popovich replied, "Well, there you go. I'm on the record."

Doesn't matter. Deal is already done and no one's going back! The NBA is getting sillier and sillier. Begining with the Knicks management.
I'll never trust this' team again.

they got cap relief, a young player, and picks, you really can't criticize them its not like they want to make a bad deal. it is what it is, if there was a trade committee that would make no sense, bad management is part of the deal.

it's funny but the people that kill Isiah for making the moves he's made would have been jumping for joy if he'd unloaded 1 of our crap contracts for picks & cap space when it's obvious we ain't going nowhere w/this team as currently constituted... MEM did that very thing & they're getting killed for it on these forums.

Pop is more pissed that the Lakers(Spurs Rival and competition) got Gasol then Memphis getting what they got. If Memphis did the same deal to a team in the east I can bet Pop wouldn't care as much.

Kind of like when Thorn tried to protest the Rasheed Wallace to Detroit trade.

Raiders traded Randy Moss to the Patriots for a 4th rd draft pick. Yet my Giants still stomped out the Patiots in the Superbowl. So deal with it Pop.

I don't think it's so much the detractors were against the trade in philosophy moreso vs feeling they could have got more for Pau.

their goal is to rebuild their franchise... they got what they wanted out of the deal IMO... it woulda been worse to trade for another guy w/big dollars attached to his name the same length as Gasol if u ask me... they need to draft themselves a future franchise talent the same way POR did & build back up w/youth... the pick they get in this year's lottery combined w/the gained cap flexibility, Crittendon & the 2 added picks late in the 1st round will enable them to do just that... i for one woulda been happy as hell if Isiah were to make such a move, but unfortunately i don't see any teams out there willing to give us picks & expirings for the longterm contracts we got... Pau is a very good player but they needed to cut bait & start fresh... he will be much happier in LA & MEM did themselves good by making this trade... now it all depends on how they use those picks they got... if they pick up a couple of guys like D Lee late in the 1st round, Crittendon matures into a solid G to pair w/Conley in their backcourt & combine w/2 talented young swingmen in Miller & Gay, they got a pretty solid core to build with... add to that the fact that they will now be 1 of the few teams w/the cap room to make a max offer to 1 of the FA's after next season, something i really wish we had right now.

would they really have been better off trading Pau for Shawn Marion, Jason Kidd or Shaq this year? what would that have accomplished? none of those players would have been happy playing in Memphis & they wouldn't have had the supporting cast to take that team far into the playoffs regardless... i also don't see why any team would give up a top lottery pick for Pau Gasol either, unless of course Isiah was the one making the deal... then anything's possible.

Every NBA Broadcast I watched after that trade and many articles that quoted NBA GM's have echoed similar sentiments to Popovich's. The Gasol trade didn't make sense for Memphis, they took very low value for Gasol, and many GM's felt they had made better offers recently, and then the trade was made abruptly out of the blue with Memphis not shopping around for better offers from other teams before they pulled the trigger.

But when I start a thread about how the trade is fishy, all the know it alls such as Solace, NYsportsfan11, and "trueblue" line up to tell me how crazy I am.

Well I guess NBA insiders who have played, covered, coached, and Gm'ed in the NBA for years are all crazy too!

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-30-33/Memphis-GM-Chris-Wallace-to-Critics--Show-Your-Faces.html','311'

ESPN's Chad Ford has remarkable access to NBA GMs and recently used it to write a fascinating article (Insider) that included lots of talk from other GMs reviewing the Pau Gasol trade. Here's an excerpt:

While most GMs weren't publicly venting their frustration on having missed out on Gasol, plenty were willing to do so privately.

The excuses ranged from blaming Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace to blaming their owners to ... well ... pointing the finger in just about every direction but their own.

One GM I spoke to asserted he had a better deal to offer, claiming that Wallace didn't return his calls.

Another said that just two weeks ago, Wallace was asking for twice as much in return. If this GM had known the Grizzlies were lowering the asking price on Gasol, he would've made another offer, he said.

A Western Conference GM said the Grizzlies' timing threw him off: "Big trades like this normally don't happen until after the All-Star break. Who would've guessed that the Grizzlies would've jumped the gun and taken such a lopsided deal three weeks before the trade deadline?"

Another prominent GM said his owner vetoed any trade that would've pushed his team into luxury-tax territory.

Sour grapes, anyone?

So, how does Memphis GM Chris Wallace react to this?

He went on Chris Vernon's radio show on AM 730 in Memphis and talked about GMs "pillow talking." You listen to the whole interview here.

Everybody wants to curry favor with the media. They do all this pillow talking with the Chad Fords of the world. But they won't go on the record. I believe there's a code we operate under in this business. And you want to be critical, fine, but go ahead and be on the record. But everyone wants to go and do that catty gossip like some high school cheerleaders, and that's something I don't appreciate. It makes doing business a lot harder.

I'll say this: Chris Wallace is refreshingly candid with the media.

Pop and the unnamed GM's sound like Playa and the rest of the numb nuts in fantasy our fantasy basketball leagues.

I am quick to the trigger when I do trades in Fantasy. First I put it out to everyone that I wanna make a deal to see who is interested. Then I get a deal like "tracy mcgrady for danny granger". That's just bull****.

Then I come outta nowhere with a deal and everyone crys about how they woulda given me this and that.......well stop trying to insult my intelect with nonsense trades.

I made a brandon roy, troy murphy, damon stoudamire and bowen for Paul Pierce, al harrington, thaddeous young trade........I got Paul, al and Thad.......I think the trade was even and I came out fine. Then I get emails from guys that ignored me before and comments from my fantasy nemisis Playa.

If you wanted to make a trade you shoulda stepped up.....we trying to keep it pushin round here.

You all need to go back and read TMS's posts on this. He's got it dead to rights.

You don't always try to trade your own talent for better talent.....you usually try to follow a GAME PLAN.

As TMS has said, Memphis' game plan is to rebuild. While you can muse that Gasol is worth more than what they got you must understand what a MARKET is. In that market, they got, exactly what they not only wanted but WHAT THEY COULD GET!!!

See, the Isiah support group does not understand because they are all too familiar with "Wow we raped the other team! We gave up garbage (expiring, picks, kids who arent very good - for - a - potential - superstar player!).

Well? Four.Five.Years and Counting? We've "raped" team after team in that concept and where has that left us? With a wagon full of "Potential.Super.Stars" while those teams we raped turned our "garbage" into gold?

Yeah... READ BETWEEN THE LINES, Fellas!!!!

It's very unfortunate that the Knicks are not comprised of 3 Pau Gasols and 2 Stromile Swifts because if they were.... we'd be in heaven come the summer of 2009. No, Instead, We're strapped with five "Franchise Cornerstones" In...........???????????

C-Curry
F-Randolph
F-Richardson
G-Crawford
G-Marbury

That's a high-powered lineup. I'm certain you could blast your friends to death in NBA LIVE with that lineup (oh, say, a year or three ago before they became Knicks).

Yet, Reality is... they're all non-defense, non-health, non-team-oriented, me-first-or-I-curl-up-in-fetal-position- CHUCKERS!!!!

So go on, blast Memphis, sing the praise of Isiah for turning Laydens "crap" over TWICE MIND YOU - into what? A team far worse than Laydens? A team in far worse cap hell than Laydens? And pretend Memphis has "screwed up".

Bleh.............please wake up...please?

excellent post. has pop looked at memphis record? they were garbage with gasol. At some point you have to cut the losses and move on. the grizzlies were not and did not need a big name and big salary comming back in a deal. as you said, the knicks do that, and look where we are....

I agree. I though Memphis made a reasonable trade. Killing them for making plans towards the future is silly. Gasol is a very very good player, but he's not a tier 1 superstar. I think people are annoyed because the league is scared of LA right now, as they have a nice starting core now.

Not to mention that Memphis may have been high on Marc Gasol. He could be the forgotten piece in this trade.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

An expiring and 3 three 20 or lower picks is or taking back a a 60 million dollar deal is the only choices Memphis had??? Come on, ya'll are way smarter then that and getting a better then that what they got isn't talking about salary. So I don't even see where Isiah enter the conversation, they took garabage back gasol.

You think they couldn't get expirings and a better pick, or better expirings?? It was just Garabage or taking 10's of million dollars in salary back??? Come on, get serious.

so basically he's mad that other teams that aren't called the Spurs are getting better "unfairly"

this coming from the team that got Tim Duncan on a season that was only a losing season because david robinson was injured.

Actually Pop is being kind of funny on this.

What would memphis get by doing it with the Lakes? Some secret payment?

I'd like to see what others offered the Grizz that was so good???

Seems to me the teams that dump the most come back the best!

I like what minny is doing post KG, POrtland is posterboy for the dump, Suns started this team with a DumpBury, and the lakes Dumped Shaq oncen upon a time.

Some teams "starphuch" and others "starDump!"

Once upon a time the Oakland A's were dumping salary by basically giving away Rollie fingers, Vida Blue, and a few others to the Yanks and Redsox. Bowie Kuhn the comish cancelled it as it was not fair. Look it up, it was interesting. Yanks actually would have been phuched as Vida fell apart quick..

Pop may have a point and I think he was cool to say it as he did. I think he knows he sounds like he is whining. He is also the man the last 10 years so he got cred.
