Karl Malone, if he's serious at a chance to get the scoring title and the ring (or at least play in the finals), needs to come to NY for the mid-level exception.
We have kurt thomas at Center, who was seriously (and this is sad), the best player in the east this past season at the Center position - Brad Miller and Big Z included. Karl Malone would get the ball on every position in the post in NY. He'd be asked to score 25 ppg, and could get more off of rebounds. He'd have veteran guards, Eisley and Ward who would defend and are used to getting the ball into the post (eisley to the mailman himself, and ward to ewing and LJ). Furthermore, Malone would have Houston and Spree to pass out of double teams to. And if Dyess returns, the Knicks would be able to let Dyess ease back into the rotation and have the PF position in the east completely locked down. We have young guys in Sweetney and Lampe to take care of Mailman as once he starts to decline - which hasn't really started.
We have Sweetney who could learn from Malone. We also have Vranes who can play in the post with that size, and won't be asked to score much. We also have vets in Weatherspoon, Harrington to come in and ball if need be, and keep Malone's minutes down and fresh for the post-season. Malone would not be option #1 anywhere else, and no other team that he'd consider would completely cater to his needs and style of play like NY. Plus, we currently, and probably always will use a half-court, slow it down, dump it into the post offense, despite Chaney wanting to run. Despite our great recent draft, we still don't have the guys for that.
With Malone, none of the top teams in the east even would be close, and we'd be in contention with some teams out west as well... remember, only one team from the west plays in the finals. Who could we not make it a series with?
LA? Yeah, there's really no stopping Shaq, but San Antone got past them.
SacTown? They just aren't ready.
Mavs? No low post presence.
Houston? A year or so away.
San Antone? Malone would match up decently with Duncan, and maybe, just maybe, we'd have Dyess back by then. We could run Dyess and Malone together, and Duncan couldn't stop both.
With Malone, Houston could go back to hitting J's, Spree could defend and slash, Ward/Eisley could dish and set up plays, and KT could play defense on the other team's top Post player.
