I Think Steve Kerr is pulling an Isiah on this one. This trade stinks for Phoenix.

Interesting. This might be a win win for PHX. Either O'Neal comes back and does well and is exactly what they need or maybe he keeps getting hurt and they have the injury exemption to use before the trade deadline.

BTW, I saw when this trade was first reported done on ESPN. It was about 2 am.

People are quick to say that this trade sucks for Phoenix but if they win a championship this year, it doesn't matter what happens the next 3. I think Shaq is going to go all-out for one last year and he's probably going to be pissed off about being traded.

Could they have gotten more for Marion? I'm sure, but they might not have been able to get the guy like Shaq that they needed and they are playing for the here and now. I think this could end up pretty well for Phoenix, they've always lacked that guy that can man-up to Duncan in the playoffs and get a stop and Shaq still has that in him, something Amare(who is like 13 years younger) can't do.

Time will tell, judging by a pure salary-cap standpoint, this is a bad trade for Phoenix, but I think Shaq is that piece to the puzzle that they've been missing.

I disagree. Before this trade, I dont believe Phoenix was good enough to win the west. This team has been together for 3-4 years without advancing to the finals. The Lakers owned the Suns this year before the Gasol trade.

I think its a good gamble by the Suns especially when you consider that they had no plans to resign Marion after this season. Despite Shaq being on the decline, he still gives them a low post presence in the playoffs. He can be affective for 15-20 mins per.....

Shaq doesn't fit this team. He's gonna slow down the offense, or the offense isn't gonna sit and wait for him, and he sure wont help the cause with the defense, but at least he'll provide them with a little interior help, but that only can go so far.

Phonenix is gonna miss Marion.

If you really follow this line of reasoning- the suns should be the ones blowing it up- because I am sorry, I don't think Shaq has anything left in the tank.

Honestly- if I were the suns, I would rather have Curry or Zach- and this is why Dolan needs a new GM.

The Suns don't need more offense, so getting guys like Curry or Zach would be a horrible idea. Shaq no matter how old can still board and D.

Awesome trade for Miami. TERRIBLE for Phoenix. The trade doesn't even make Phoenix better this year: Shaq doesn't fit that offense and he's basically done at this point. I understand the view of a closing window for a championship, but this isn't the trade that fixes this. An extra year of contracts and you get the worse player and more aged player. Doesn't make sense to me.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I think at first glance it looks like a bad deal for Phoenix. But if you break it down, I think it's not that bad.

First of all, I think they were absolutely sure that they couldn't, or wouldn't, re-sign Marion this offseason and they were going to lose him for nothing. Secondly, if Shaq is motivated enough to win his 5th ring, he could give them the kind of frontline to go up against San Antonio. Plus Kerr knows that this team has a 2 year window to win a championship so he's going all in, with a total rebuild coming after Nash and Shaq both come off the books in 2 years.

For Miami, this is a no-brainer. They need to rebuild and Shaq was useless there. They can build around Marion and Wade.

Shaq will not fit in with Phoenix's uptempo style. He can't run the floor and physically he won't hold up.

1 year of Marion is better than havign Shaq for them at this point.

And by the way. For everyone says Shaq will slow them down - he won't. Phoenix doesn't run a 5man fast-break, the center trails, Shaq would be playing at the same pace he always does at no expense to the offense.

It's not just running the fast break, its the pace of the game.

Honestly, I think Shaq is going to give whatever he's got left in the tank for the rest of this season, maybe it will end up in a championship for the Suns. If they don't win it this year, I think that's it for Shaq. Theres no way he could play a full season in that style.

Do you really think D'Antoni would sign off on this trade if he didn't think Shaq would fit? Althouh Kerr is the GM, D'Antoni still wields more power there.

Shaq's going to play 25 MPG at most. I wouldn't be surprised if half of those minutes are with Barbosa giving Nash rest... I could see Shaq being a change of pace player for Suns, and a very nice weapon to have in in the playoffs if the other teams forces the Suns to play a slower half court set.

Honestly I don't know what their thinking- but I do think they're going to see a reduction in overall volume of shot attempts- which is one of the major advantages they carry over opponents. And feeding Shaq does neutralize some of the overall benefits of Steve Nash. Not saying a great PG can't play with a center like Shaq, but its not often you see a PG really dictate the pace of the game (Nash's greatest strength), when you have a pure post player in the O (and not a finisher like Amare or a pick and roll player).

And not to mention, Shaq doesn't really do anything for the defense at this point in his career. And losing Marion hurts that area tremendously. He created 4 turnovers a game all by himself.

Why would you give up one of your key cogs for a change of pace player?

Hey Des, I agree with you that it's a risk to their style of play, but I feel like it's a risk they had to take if they are going to win. They made this trade for the series that could come up against Spurs. It might work out, it might not, but I feel like it's a risk they had to take if they are going to win a Championship.

I don't think changing you're style and removing one of your catalysts at midseason is good business. If they were adding Shaq simply to change pace and kept Marion around- then we'd be talking a different story. But this is a middle of season sea change that's a major league risk.
