Bulls Refused To Go Into Lux Tax, Miss Out On Gasol
February 4, 2008 - 5:20 am
Chicago Tribune -
According to Memphis Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley, the reason why Pau Gasol is a member of the Los Angeles Lakers today and not the Chicago Bulls is because the Bulls refused to go over the luxury tax, the Chicago Tribune is reporting.

"We had conversations with Chicago which were non-satisfactory," Heisley said. "They didn't want to take on the luxury-tax situation, and Los Angeles would. In this league, if you're in a big-market area you can afford to do those things.

"We negotiated as hard as we could for quality players, and [the Bulls] refused to give up anybody in their core group. What they offered us were guys who play on the second and third team, so we turned them down." [READ]

Chicago wasn't the only team that wanted Gasol !

Cleveland wanted to build an offer around Drew Gooden and Larry Hughes. Chicago tried to tempt the Grizzlies with Andres Nocioni and Tyrus Thomas. Portland mustered a package of Travis Outlaw and Raef LaFrentz.

IMHO,all those rumors regarding the Blazers are false unless they can deal LaFrentz and/or Miles. ?

That makes absolutely no sense. You get Aldridge one draft, next draft Greg Oden, already shelled out some big $$$ for Pryzbilla and then you add a pricey Gasol? Sounds phishy too me considering they got rid of Zach Randolph because he made too much...now they are lookin to deal for Gasol?
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

So was Kwame part of the Laker core? And the guy whose name I don't even know part of the core? Is that why he played so many minutes? And the 2 draft picks that will be in the latter parts of the first round, they are core?

Kwame was a dump. Nocioni just signed a long term deal and perhaps Thomas looks too much like Stromile these days to take him on.

These days taking a dump does wonders two years down the road. Grizz losing with Pau anyway so what are they really losing??

Hughes is a bad contract and Gooden is having a good run with Lebron but he is not know as a solid character.

Grizz have flexibilty and some usable assets.

Ahh you got caught up on the word core. Expiring contracts have a lot of value in this league. Those who don't acknowledge that are simply overlooking a very important detail. Kwame had value solely because of that. Memphis also got a group of young players, including the draft picks, and including Marc Gasol. They didn't get a "core" piece, but they got a healthy package in return, and clearly better than what the Bulls were offering.

Because NBA gms don't know how to do their job. The Grizzles could easily move miller and would have made a nice deal if they could get Nocioni and Noah two nice rotation players and both are very movable.
