It seems that the Kniks are the only ones with massive expiring contracts- particuarly Marbury. So this may be the best time for the Knicks to be the middle man in a trade for Kidd. The way I see it - there is only one tyeam -with resources to make it happen- Phoenix. Boston is tapped out - and if they do want to go over the cap they would have done it already. San Antonio has an MVP of the finals PG- so I don't think Kidd is going there. Dallas- may be a wildcard since according to hoops hype they have both Finley and Shaun Bradley (18.5+5.5) -who expire this year - but I have a feeling the Nets want some players as well- and it's not happening - in terms of anyone good- Devin Harris, Jason Terry etc - they really don't want to mess with their depth. http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries/dallas.htm

So the Knicks could:
1. Marbury + Lee+ Balkman + Cash - for Kidd and Boone and two first round picks (protected)- the nets get two players-we get a decent center/pf -who can actually shoot and also gets rebounds etc. We give up Balkman - who can't dribble or shoot or take it one on one to the hoop during a fast break (Lakers game-pitiful). Also - the Nets get their two first round NBA ready picks NOW.

2. We take Kidd and do one fo two scenarios:

a. Trade to dallas for the expiring contracts of Finley+ Bradley and give them Kidd and GET two late round first round pick.
b. Trade to Kidd to Phoenix + Cash + Q Richardson and Collins for Boris Diaw and two late round first picks.

As I said - since the Knicks are one of the few orgainzations that can actually take a financial hit (proven by being over the salary cap for the LAST 20 YEARS- this would be a great way to dump salary and get picks. We are going to lose either 2009 or 2010 pick to Utah - so might as well use the deep pockets of Dolan - to pick dump Marbs and pick up Boone and 2 picks from the nets since we in effect are giving them two first round picjks that are ready to play right away.

Dallas- means that by the end of this season we save 23 M- instead of waiting next year and get atleast 4 draft picks - two from Dallas and two from the Nets- everone wins- especially us!!

Phoenix although we pick up the long term contract of Diaw - he definitely better than both Lee and Balkman - in tersm of offense, passing etc. He would be perfect - because they ball handling would be spread out between Nate/Craw and Diaw - always giving us a ballhandler.

We will still have Malik's expiring contract end of next year- and by reducing the roster - we get more playing time for Mo Randolph and Wilson Chandler.

1. Knicks only have Fred Jones and Randolph Morris as expiring contracts!
2. Bradley retired right?
3. Your trades to Dallas and PHX don't work under the collective bargaining agreement.

Here is all I am saying:
1. The Knicks ability to take on tax- can get us a couple of draft picks- four from what I see - these could be traded to a Minnesota for a high level pick and players-or atlanta or Elton Brand -anyway - you have a lot more possibilities with 4 picks in your hand - you could even force them to take Curry or Randolph.
2. We have been through this before - even if a player retires you still have to pay him- check the hoopshype link - they are paying Bradley and Finley this year about 23M. (besides we have already paid the tax of Marbury/Rose). We give Dallas the one thing they really want - the ability to keep their depth and players and get Kidd for a year or two to see if they win a championship. I am sure Cuban would do this in a heartbeat-.

I am not sure about the CBA stuff its pretty complicated - I grant you- but the point is - the Knicks are in perfect position to be arbitors of a Kidd trade- as we have salary that expires soon- around the same level (17-22M), won't mind paying tax for the right player or four draft picks.

Anyway - you get the gist - I am just thinking that the Knicks are one of the few teams - that would give out cash consideration and have mega expiring contract.

I would keep Jones, Randolph, M Rose- that way we are really under the cap in a hurry. You can still use Malik for next year - along with the draft picks - you could get the best player on a really bad team-or a few players in the draft.

Anyway - I see this as a great opportunity to deal- dole out cash (pun intended) and pick up a boatload of picks

how do u figure when it's gonna be 3 more years til Zach's contract comes off the books? we also have Curry, Jamal, Jefferies, Turd & Q's contracts to deal with also... the Knicks aren't getting under the cap in any hurry as long as we still have Zach's albatross contract combined w/those other guys.
