COLD Q HEADED TO BENCH

By MARC BERMAN

January 8, 2008 -- CHICAGO - Isiah Thomas is ready to pull Quentin Richardson from the starting lineup tonight against the Bulls, but claims he's doing it more because of Richardson's recent injury - a bruised right thigh suffered in Houston - than his poor numbers.

However, Thomas acknowledged Richardson's disastrous season in his bluntest terms yet. Richardson is shooting an embarrassing 31.5 percent and averaging 6.8 points in 30 minutes.

MORE at Berman's Knicks Blog

"He's having a really tough year," Thomas said. "I can't put a finger on it because he has a good work ethic. He works. He practices. He's having a difficult time."

Thomas said Jared Jeffries will start in Richardson's place at small forward. He stopped short of saying Richardson is in danger of losing his job permanently, but will continue to slash his minutes.

"If he's not playing well I can take him out early, which we do," Thomas said. "When you line up, you know he's there. Those are the kind of guys you want. . . . He may not be playing well, but his competitive fire is always there."

Thomas and Richardson have had bench confrontations, including one in Charlotte when Thomas was restrained by assistant Herb Williams as Richardson could be seen on the bench cussing aloud after getting yanked.

"He's a guy who sometimes you can ride pretty hard," Thomas said. "Sometimes when he gets angrier, he has a tendency to play better."

The Knicks stayed in the playoff race into April last season because of Richardson's rebounding, defensive tenacity and shot-making. With Richardson unable to toss the ball into Lake Michigan, the Knicks are left without a scary 3-point shooter. Richardson took responsibility for the Knicks' 8-24 start.

"Of course I do," he said. "I'm one of the veterans on the team. I always take a lot of the accountability."

A hyperextended elbow slowed Richardson in November but it has healed and his surgically-re paired disk gives him no pain.

"I'm not going to make excuses," Richardson said. "I'm out there not playing well right now."

Former Bull Eddy Curry took a shot at Chicago GM John Paxson for his timing on the Scott Skiles firing.

"It was crazy they let him go Christmas Eve," Curry said.

Paxson would not give Curry a long-term deal because of his irregular heartbeat. Curry is not a fan of Paxson - or of Skiles.

"He's extremely hard on you, especially (when) you're going as hard as you can and he continues to push us," Curry said. "I'm pretty sure you can only take so much."

I just read this article too and was noticing the same thing.

Curry has never been in a position where coaches PUSH him. In HS he was probably bigger faster than ANY other guy he was playing with and against.

Classic case of a guy who probably needed 2-3 years at college.

Thats funny, I was just reading it too

I definitely agree with your last statement Martin. Curry is still a little kid because he's been coddled up until this year and he's had to work through it. So far, he's only gotten larger, which isn't a good sign. Curry would have really benefited playing for someone like Jim Calhoun in college. Oh well.

If Q is playing because he has a competitive fire, but sucks, why are Curry & Randolph playing? Because they suck and they have no competitive fire.

Is it degrees of suckiness that matter?

The fact he's speaking from a confident standpoint of where he feels wrong has been done to Skiles and himself in the past, is disturbing. Skiles already spoke on his firing and Man'd Up like a soldier stating he didn't get the job done. This is why EY gets trashed here and on other boards. It's not like fans are trying to pick a fight with the guy but come on! EY needs to realize there are people who make minimum wage, who get pushed harder than him on a daily basis and excel under such circumstances. He gets paid millions and all anyone is asking of him is to put the Cheeseburgers, Ho-Hos, Bag of Pork Rhines, down in the off-season and run maybe an extra mile or two a day. If you ask this of him, well he can only take so much and wilts like a willow tree when you do.

I want him off this team so bad.

I completely agree... he still speaks like a child. He has no emotional development. At the same time, he is worth an insane amount of money. He's not going to change because he's been given everything and is worth more than likely all of us combined. It's worked for him thus far, so why change?

If I went to straight to the pros from high school, good God what I bust I would have turned into. I had no direction or purpose at that age. I only started figuring things out until I was a junior or senior in college and I'd say I'm a much better person as a result. I'm definitely more employable as a result. Being a professional basketball player is only about natural ability; it's also about professionalism, and Curry's undeveloped mind can't grasp this because he's been handed everything.

Shaq only grew up just a few years ago but he got it done on the court ENOUGH to win a few rings.

I say ENOUGH because Shaq I don't think ever really realized his true potential. Just free thows alone could have added a few points on his avg.

Shaq is a large being and for him to stay as agile and keep stamina is ENOUGH for a great HOF career and Millions of what he keeps after his wife is thru with him.

Eddy does not really have to do to much than WANT to play ball and work a bit harder. He has so much talent but he is not learning enough.

Get 3 more boards a game, and stop the offensive fouling!!!!!!!!!

FOr eddy it comes easy. He will likley retire with 30 million saved if not stupid and never work again. Just eat and play with guns.

you'd need one of those world's stonrongest men competitors to tie an anchor around curry's waist and then pulling him with his teeth. thats the only way i see eddy being pushed (or pulled in this case!).

Eddy is a nice kitten but he is in the wrong place.
It happened with people. They take wrong path in life.
But he is young and has a lot of money. I hope he will find his way.
Good luck Eddy.

Eddy should do McDonalds commercials. He could be the opposite of Jared, the Subway guy. "And McDonalds took me from this... to THIS!!! Try the Eddy diet: 16 double bacon cheeseburgers, 5 big macs and 7 orders of large fries, with a diet coke!"
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.
