What is the take on Larry Johnson for next year. Does anyone know what his current status is for next year?

Obviously, he is practically untradeable and probably unplayable.

I think you pretty much got it there. Quite possibly he could play in a reserve role for limited minutes, but I don't think much more.

The 4 pointer was great but here's to hoping he hangs them up.

I'm sure everybody agrees there's more to LJ than that 4 point play. He's still the strongest Knick by far, and the best for backing in against your monster 4s and bumping with the broad centers. Camby needs somebody like that to keep him safe don't you think? Thomas is great and getting better, and he can shoot, but he gets in foul trouble (same for Othella), something LJ is pretty crafty about avoiding. In fact he draws fouls like flypaper.

If he's healthy enough to play he'll be a big asset. Plus he may be the only reason the other Knicks can communicate with VG. If not, I hope he sticks around in some capacity.

LJ has to be healthy... No matter what.. The Knicks need consistancy. If he thinks he can play 20 minutes a game then OK - but if not then he is just taking up a spot that could go to a player who needs playing time and the experience of working with the team in game situations.

even if he retires were not gonna get the med exception. if nething lj is also needed as a team leader. sprewell was quoted in saying that lj keeps us all together, he gives us all flowers.....

even though thats a tad disturbing about flowers, it is true, he is the leader of the team off the court. i feel that if larry jus takes some time off, and moderately train, hell be back into playign form in the 2002/2003 season.

I'd definitely like to see LJ off the bench. With a starting lineup that includes Spree, Houston and Jackson, that seems to be enough leadership on the floor, espicially at the offensive end. The Knicks frontcourt will have to step it up on the defensive rotations / definsive leadership. That's where they would miss LJ the most. Maybe that's why VanGund insists on starting LJ - he can't count on Thomas and Camby.

thomas does a better job than lj on antonio davis, tim duncan, and other big pfs out there. lj puts up a good fight, but thomas makes them tired. however only when thomas is not as temperamental and doesnt pick up 2 fouls and a technical in 2 minute spans. why does jvg insist to start lj? because of loyalty. veterans deserve to start, its aclled respect. lenny wilkens started mark jackson over alvin williams because of veteranship, and seeing as how that was not helping out too much, wilkens traded jackson instead of benching him because that would have been disrespectful to jacksons career. thats why centers like ewing start, why mourning started over brian grant on his first day back (i think). but either way i wouldnt sell camby and thomas short on defense. u could get that feeling in h playoffs last year, but camby's sister was raped and kidnapped, so dont blame camby if he wasnt himself.

My bet is LJ wouldn't retire unless forced to by the docs, in which case the Knicks would get the medical exception.

Yall are right. He's a team leader. Think how much Wright can learn from him. And as for starting, I'd bet half my salary (not a hefty amount, I have to admit) that if his back isn't a lot better LJ would take a non-starting role and play just as hard because that's the kind of player he is. He could sit back, half coach the way he always does, come in for 20 minutes or so a game depending on his health. Thomas could start. That's what they should've talked Ewing into, but I guess that wasn't happening.
